Healing Evangelism

Healing Evangelism

The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it (John 1:5).

Revival continues to explode in spite of, and in the midst of, darkness such as the brutal massacres of Christians and others in North Korea, North Africa, Syria and the Middle East.

Local

Local Australian examples of healing evangelism, for example, continue to increase.  Many churches now have ministry teams that pray for people at the end of each service.

Joel Shaw, a young pastor at Glory City Church in Brisbane leads youth in prayer healing evangelism in the streets and malls of Brisbane, along with others.  Here’s a recent example from him:

Chris
Chris Turner

“I am just on a total high from last night! After church we went down with the young adults to Kangaroo Point.  Chris Turner [youth pastor] and I were talking about all the opportunities that were all around us.  As we were walking from one location to the next we saw this big bunch of young people smoking and rabbling around.  Chris stopped and called out to them.  At first they didn’t even acknowledge that he was there.  Chris called out a second time in a louder voice “HEY GUYS!”  Their conversation died down and they started to listen.

“Chris said, “Have you guys seen any miracles?”  Some jeered, some were serious and others quite friendly.  Within 30 seconds there was a guy who admitted to having a knee problem, One prayer and he was instantly healed!  A girl stepped up saying that she had period pain and she was also instantly healed.

“A guy next to me started to talk to me about his elbow.  He had heaps of pain and limited movement.  By this stage it was electric.  I knew there wasn’t a chance this guy wouldn’t be healed, so I said, “Watch this!” to the other guys around me and began to pray.  I felt the presence of God go through me and he stumbled backward.  “WHAT THE @#$%!” He exclaimed, moving his arm around vigorously.  He began to jump around and continue to stream expletives in total shock that he had been healed.

“By that time I had lost track of the other miracles that were happening all around me.  Immediately another guy comes up to me and said to me something along the lines of “I need help, I have a lot of sin!”  It was because of the miracles and the presence of God he was convicted of his sin!  The loving kindness leads us to repentance.

So as I hugged the guy with the healed arm for the 5th time, I proceed to share about the price that Jesus paid for his sin.  Turns out he had been to church but was desperate to encounter the supernatural so had delved deep into witchcraft and other new age practices.  I prayed for him, and he said he was so overwhelmed by God’s presence.   …  We got his number and his address and he is coming to church on Friday.   Seriously Kingdom life is the most exciting life!  That was an opportunity we could have easily walked by.”

During the last few years I led teams of young people from these churches on missions in the South Pacific.  Healings, deliverance and salvation increase with each visit.  Everyone prayed for in one pagan village reported their pain had gone, and for the first time ever the paramount chief asked for healing prayer for himself.  When Andrew Chee and the pastors prayed for him the pain left.  Previously he had burned a Bible given to him.  Now he is saying that a church can be built where he burned the Bible.

Last year a team saw everyone healed that they prayed for on Pentecost Island, Vanuatu.  The testimonies opened the way for more salvation, deliverance, and people being filled with the Spirit and equipped for powerful service.  That includes detecting and removing magic and witchcraft.

Grant Shaw, Joel’s brother and now pastor of Kingdom Culture Church in Brisbane, joined me at many revival meetings in Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands.  We saw God move powerfully on hundreds of people, especially at a national youth conference in the Solomon Islands.  One young man, healed at the conference, that night prayed for his mum and brother in their home and they both were healed.  He had never done that before.  We prayed with nurse Leah Waqa in Port Vila (the capital of Vanuatu) who that week had been led to pray in the hospital for a girl who had died after being hit by a truck.  Leah prayed for the girl for over half an hour of Spirit-led prayer commanding her to live.  The girl lived.

I have written more about this and the resulting transformations in South Pacific Revivals and the expanded Flashpoints of Revival.  See also “21st Century Revivals in the South Pacific”.

We live through amazing revivals globally this century.  One of the most obvious is with Iris Global, with Roland and Heidi Baker.  They write:

Joel & Candice Shaw with Roland & Heidi Baker

Iris Global (previously Iris Ministries) is a holistic ministry that we began in 1980 as we took small evangelistic street drama teams to Asia on short-term mission trips. Our emphasis was the creative presentation of the Gospel, and our ministry grew greatly. But we were so impacted by the condition of the poor that we changed direction drastically and began to stop for the one and prove the love of God by first addressing the temporal needs of the broken and humble, “the least of these.” We focused on the bottom of society rather than the top. Now, after coming to Africa and starting with street beggar children in 1995, we have seen a people movement spread across the ten provinces of Mozambique. Massive desperation for God rising out of a long history of repression, poverty and natural disasters has fueled revival, one that is sparking more fire in nations around the world. And signs and wonders are following all the way.

“What began as a ragged band of young beggars, thieves and delinquents has developed by the power of the Holy Spirit into a closely-knit national family of thousands of churches and a broad ministry encompassing Bible schools, children’s centers, church-based orphan care, primary education, medical clinics, constant evangelistic and healing outreaches, farming, well drilling and much else. Our vision in the Lord is constantly increasing.

“But most of all we proclaim Jesus. He is our salvation, our prize, our reward, our inheritance, our destination, our motivation, our joy, wisdom and sanctification — and absolutely everything else we need, now and forever. All His grace and power flow to us through the Cross and no other way. We are glad to be known as social workers and humanitarians, and to have a reputation for doing good. But all is in vain if we do not bring to the people faith in our God and Savior Jesus Christ. We want to be known by His Name, first and foremost. And we do not expect fruitfulness to come out of anything but intimacy with Him …”    (http://www.irisglobal.org).

The Light still shines.  We can live in the Light.

Or, to use another picture, we can hoist our sail of faith and catch the wind of the Spirit blowing powerfully in the earth.

Europe: Seven Signs of Hope (January 2014)

Europe: Seven signs of hope

Almost 3,000 young people from 40 nations in Europe started the New Year at the Mission-Net congress in Offenburg, Germany, where they received faith, hope and vision for their continent. Jeff Fountain was one of the speakers who shared about 7 signs of hope he sees in Europe today. These signs are:

1. New prayer initiatives are emerging across the continent.

2. The shakings of God: he has been shaking the Marxist world, the Muslim world and now the world of Mammon. “Everything not based on God’s kingdom will be shaken,” says Fountain.

3. New spiritual hunger: despite (or because of) secularism, spiritual hunger is rising. Here is a ripe harvest field for incarnational mission.

4. New expressions of church are emerging outside of traditional church walls.

5. The New Europeans: look who God is bringing to Europe – from Asia, Africa and Latin America. Almost half of all EU migrants are already church members. Migrant churches contribute to urban church renewal bringing lost gifts of spiritual discernment, colourful worship and bold proclamation.

6. Unity of heart: never before has there been as much convergence as today between old rival church traditions – Pentecostal, Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox. Spiritual renewal movements have swept over denominational barriers.

7. Recovery of the gospel of the Kingdom: the awareness that the Gospel is not just good news about salvation, but about Christ’s lordship over all spheres of life is leading to expressions of mission involving the transformation of individuals, families and communities.

Revival impacted Bolivia by Ruth Ruibal

RuibalGod did it then – is doing it now – and will again

“The president was so impressed that he loaned the young 19 year old evangelist his presidential jet to travel to meetings through the entire country, giving him the use of stadiums and asking mayors to declare a holiday when the young evangelist arrived in their cities to preach.”

How a genuine revival impacted Bolivia

In 1995, Julio Ruibal, a prominent charismatic evangelist from Bolivia who lived and worked in Cali, Colombia, was martyred for his faith. The story of his courageous ministry of unity and opposition against Cali’s drug cartels is chronicled in the well-known Transformations video, produced by The Sentinel Group. However, less known internationally is his role in a genuine revival that impacted Bolivia in the 1970s.

In the early 1970s, after his conversion in Los Angeles, Julio returned to the city of La Paz, Bolivia and began to share Christ. After a core group of young people came to the Lord and started gathering in homes, conversions began to multiply exponentially until there were more than 5,000 new Christians.

After word of this spiritual outbreak spread in the predominantly Catholic country, Ruibal found himself in a meeting with Bolivia’s president, Hugo Bánzer Suárez. The president was so impressed that he loaned the young evangelist his presidential jet to travel to meetings through the entire country, giving him the use of stadiums and asking mayors to declare a holiday when the young evangelist arrived in their cities to preach.

During the next several years, hundreds of thousands of people were converted to Christ. Today the evangelical population of Bolivia has grown to more than 11 percent.

“As repentance was his lifestyle, it became a fruit of the revival.”
Looking back to those days, Ruibal’s widow Ruth says the Bolivian revival was marked by repentance and simple obedience to Jesus.

“Julio’s conversion was dramatic and his repentance was deep. He would lie on the living room floor saying, ‘Jesus I have found You; I have found everything.’

Up until then, Julio was supporting himself by running a yoga academy. He told all his students about his conversion, and half the students were saved while half left. He closed down the academy and from that day, for the rest of his life, he lived by faith. Most people would have tried to save the academy or wait until they had something else to do. But Julio was drastic in obeying. As repentance was his lifestyle, it became a fruit of the revival. People were getting right with others, making restoration for prior wrongs and dramatically stepping out from sin.”

The Bolivian revival affected the nation and the culture. “This was a sovereign move of God over a nation, not just one church being revived,” says Ruibal. “Up until that time, Bolivia had had more presidents than years of independence. There had been so many coups. At one point there were four presidents in one day. However, when President Bánzer opened the country to the gospel, he stayed in power for eight years. That was a first for Bolivia. Bolivia experienced its first economic boom. Churches sprang up everywhere and poverty was diminished.”

“God had replaced the bone eaten away by cancer!”
There were also many miracles. “The miracles were so remarkable and abundant that it is hard to adequately describe,” says Ruibal. “One of the outstanding miracles involved a woman who was dying of bone cancer. She was bed-ridden and her upper leg could not be moved for lack of bone. Her sons asked Julio to pray for her. He led her to the Lord and then prayed for healing. Then Julio felt the Lord telling him to lift the lady to her feet. He helped pull her up and she stood. God had replaced the bone eaten away by cancer! There were other types of miracles, too. Food was multiplied supernaturally. At a dinner, fish appeared on a plate in front of several elders. Once, money multiplied so that we could feed some leaders who had cometo minister.”

The revival was marked by sweeping conversions that sparked church growth. Before the revival the largest evangelical church in La Paz had about 90 members. Missionaries from many denominations had labored for decades with little results. What Julio, then only 19 years old, brought in was a commitment to prayer.

“When we started the church in 1974 we would teach the young people and then in the evenings they would go to home groups to teach what they had learned,” says Ruibal. “We would then reunite after the meetings and pray for the people in the meetings. This meant we prayed from 10 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. or 3 a.m. every night. There was a lot of prayer.”

“From then on the stadiums were too small to hold the crowds.”
The stadium meetings had their own challenges. “It started in the stadium in La Paz, with thousands attending. But one day when the meeting was to start at 10 a.m., the police called Julio to ask for his advice. The crowds had come around 5 a.m. to get seats in the stadium, but when they arrived they found the stadium was already filled. People had spent the night there, and the overflow crowd was now at 40,000. The police feared a riot. That day Julio preached to the crowd within the stadium and then from the wall of the stadium to the overflow. Miracles took place as people repented and came to Jesus.”

“From then on the stadiums were too small to hold the crowds. The meetings were held on mountainsides and in plazas. There was no PA system at that time large enough to reach the tens of thousands of  people, so they were encouraged to bring their transistor radios and turn them up as loud as possible. Since the meetings were being broadcast, everyone could hear the preaching. The Assemblies of God sold 33,000 Bibles and New Testaments in only two weeks. In fact, the Bible Society of Argentina and other outlets had to send them their stock of Bibles as well.”

As a result of the revival many new churches were planted in Bolivia. “Ekklesía, the church we started in La Paz, has more than 23,000 members today,” says Ruibal. “Daughter churches  were started in every state in Bolivia and also in Colombia and Argentina.” Also other churches benefited. “There were about 15 churches started in the city of La Paz alone as a result of the revival.”

 ________________________________________________________

I felt the presence of the Lord come on me so powerfully I grabbed

the podium, the pulpit, to keep from falling,

and that was a mistake.

Instantly I was hurled a number of feet in a different direction

_______________________________________________________

During 1995 the Christian Tabernacle in Houston had a strong emphasis on knowing Christ intimately.  In August of 1996 Hector Giminez from Argentina ministered there with great power and many significant healings.  Awareness of the presence and glory of the Lord increased during October, especially with the ministry of evangelist Tommy Tenney, who was to speak the morning of October 20.  Dr R Heard was preparing to welcome him and had just read about God’s promise of revival from 2 Chronicles 7:14 when God’s power hit the place even splitting the plexiglas pulpit.

Powerful times of repentance, evangelism and healing came with this visitation of God.  People are still being converted, often 30-40 a meeting.  Pastor Heard commented that everywhere in the church the carpet is stained with the tears of people touched by God and repenting.  He spoke by telephone in November 1996 with Norman Pope of New Wine Ministries in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, who put the transcript of the discussion on the Awakening E-mail.  The following is an edited selection of Dr R Heard’s comments:

Background

This is just a kind of a brief background about me.  I spent 18 1/2 years in crusade evangelism, and I did not have a natural gifting for this kind of thing and God, at our conversion, really addressed the need for his empowerment in my life.  I came from a very legalistic kind of background with a lot of condemnation.  I was raised that way. . . .  So at any rate, because of the background, the condemnation, and so forth, when I began an evangelistic ministry, we spent 18 1/2 years travelling and I prayed an average of 8 to 12 hours a day.  But it was not for the right reasons.  It was motivated because of my need to prove myself to God in hope that he, in turn, might minister through us and to us.  But in spite of that, there was a measure of God’s anointing and blessing on our ministry.  I think my motivation was wrong, but he in his infinite wisdom and in his grace, decided to bless us anyway.  When I came here to pastor, I fell into the trap that so many pastors fall into.  The demands of pastoral ministry become so large that your devotional time erodes away and you don’t even realize that it’s being taken from you.

Then about 2½ years ago, I experienced a heart problem, and I’m a very healthy person who was in the top 3% of the physically fit in the nation.  I exercised regularly and ate the right things and I had about 45 or 50 episodes of ventricular tacordia.  I should not have survived the first one, much less that many.  But what happened after that is what set the stage for what God has been building toward here, I think, and that the church has grown dramatically during that period of time.

We started with about 250 members and we have about 3,000 now, but though I had built staff, the people of the church continued to do end runs around my staff to come to me, particularly those that were the founding members and that were here when I came.  And I felt an obligation to them, and they had been here longer than I had.  But after my illness they backed away and began to work with the staff and saw the quality staff we had, and that released me then to go back into the kind of devotion that I had cherished through the years, and God began a renewal work in me almost immediately, and that was in May of 1994 and during the rest of the year it was a very sacred time, and God began to address issues with me in terms of my relationship with him and knowing him.

Out of that, I spent the entire year of 1995 teaching.  Every sermon I preached was on knowing Christ and intimacy with Christ.  Our Church moved into a different dimension in their relationship with God during that period of time and began to truly hunger after God.  We had all fallen into this American dichotomy of religion where you are a Christian and a Christian is what you do, not really who you are; where you have room for him in your heart, but not a whole lot of room for him, perhaps, in your life.  He really addressed issues like that with us.

I’ve always hungered for God.  Any time I heard about a fresh move of God I wanted to go and see and get prayed for, and receive impartation.  We had been to Toronto and there was something wonderful imparted.  I had heard about the revival in Argentina and had one of the pastors from there speak here for us and I went down and preached for him.  He has the second largest church in the world.  And I received impartation from those encounters as well.  We were really hungering after more of the Lord.

I spent time in Zimbabwe in August this year [1996], where I had a team of people with us, and was flying back across the Atlantic, and was scheduled to have Hector Giminez, who pastors in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  He was to start with me on a Friday afternoon at 2 pm and I was flying in late Thursday.  As I was flying in, the Holy Spirit spoke to me over the Atlantic saying that because we had sown into an area of harvest and a field of labor that we would not personally receive anything back from, he was going to move our church into a new season and answer our prayers and reveal himself to us.

I flew in and saw Hector the next afternoon as the service was starting and just mentioned to him that God had given me a word that he was really going to bless us.  He walked out and opened his Bible and pulled out his notes, and his first sermon was, “God is going to change the season.”  Here in the last four months of this year God is moving us into a new season with him

I returned the latter part of August from Zimbabwe.  And almost immediately things began to take place.  He was with us through the rest of that week and we have begun to see a number of miracles happen.  People being healed of cancer, a man burned over 85% of his body with third degree burns, severely burned in his lungs, recovered with almost no problems at all.  There were no problems in his breathing.  They gave him a 3% chance to live.  Even his hair is growing back and his eyebrows and eyelashes and just a number of things.  The church was pregnant with anticipation, and we’d been wanting to go to Brownsville and to be honest, when I decided to go a number of our staff didn’t really care to.  We felt like we were having a great move here.

But I brought about 30 of our staff to Brownsville and did not feel that we had received all that much impartation, but saw what was very obviously a work of God in terms of the hundreds of people that came forward for conversion each night at Brownsville. . . .   That was just a couple of weeks ago, and we returned back on a Saturday, and Sunday morning, we went into service.

To back up, two weeks previously I had an evangelist come to speak for us that had been a long time friend (Tommy Tenney).  We had such a touch of God that I kept him, and he cancelled his meetings and came back the next weekend.  And once more we had a great move and in fact we decided to have a church special prayer meeting the next night and our church has been in prayer for years and years for revival.  But we called a special prayer meeting on the Monday night and had such a move that I felt we needed to bring him back that weekend, which I did.

Sunday October 20, 1996

So I flew in on Saturday and he drove in.  We didn’t see each other, but at service the next morning I was getting ready to introduce him and there was a very great presence of God in the auditorium, and the Holy Spirit had really been addressing with me for several weeks about 2 Chronicles 7:14.  I walked to the platform and over my Bible and read 2 Chronicles 7:14 and told the people what I felt like the Holy Spirit had been speaking to me was that we were to seek his face and not his hand.  And that so many people were seeking manifestations and something from God without actually seeking God.  And when I finished that, the Spirit of the Lord came upon me very powerfully.  I’m not given to manifestations, and have told the people of our church, “If you ever see me fall, it will be because God put me down.  I don’t do courtesy falls, and no one pushes me over.”

I felt the presence of the Lord come on me so powerfully I grabbed the podium, the pulpit, to keep from falling, and that was a mistake.  Instantly I was hurled a number of feet in a different direction, and the people said it was like someone just threw me across the platform.  The pulpit fell over that I had been holding for support, and I was out for an hour and a half. . . .  I almost hesitate to tell you what . . .  I literally could not move.  I’ve heard about people being pinned to the floor and things like that, but to be honest, I came from a classical Pentecostal background and I’ve seen genuine moves of God and I’ve seen my share of weirdness.  And if something like this happens, and it doesn’t happen to someone that I know, that is credible and a person of integrity, I don’t discount it, I just have a tendency to let the jury stay out until I know that this has indeed happened to credible people.  But I could not move.  And I saw a manifestation of the glory of God. . . . I saw a vision and I did not see the Lord.  I saw his glory.  . . .  There were thick clouds, dark clouds, edged in golden white and the clouds would ‑ there would be bursts of light that would come through that would just go through me absolutely like electricity. . . .  and that went on for an hour and a half.

I could feel his glory.  There was literally a pulsating feeling, as though I was being fanned by the presence of the glory of God.  And it’s still really difficult for me to talk about it. . . .  There were angelic manifestations that surrounded the glory and I didn’t know how long I was out.  They said later that I was there for an hour and a half.  In the meanwhile, all across the building people, they tell me, were falling under the presence of God.  That’s not something that has happened much in our church, but people were stretched out everywhere.  And the altar.  We have three services on Sunday and people would enter the hallways that lead to the foyer and then into the auditorium and they would enter the hallways and begin to weep.  There was such a glory of God and they would come into the foyer and not stop ‑ they would just go straight to the altar ‑ people stretched out everywhere.  There was all kinds of angelic visitations that people had experienced.  And we’ve got professional people in our church ‑ doctors, professors.  Their bodies were strewn everywhere.  And when I felt the glory of God lift, I tried to get up and couldn’t.  It was as though every electrical mechanism in my body had short‑circuited.  I couldn’t make my hands or my feet respond to what I was trying to tell them to do.  It was as though I was paralyzed.  And I was able to slowly lift a finger, and one of the pastors saw me and I beckoned for him to come and he got some of the other pastors and they carried me into the office and set me down.

Well, the pulpit, they said, fell over, and it’s made of space‑age plastic.  It’s flat in the front with  rounded sides that go back; it’s all molded, so the pulpit is three‑sided.  The sides go back at a forty‑five degree angle and then it has the base that it stands on, that is attached to it, and then it has the top that you set your Bible upon with your notes.  And it’s made of a kind of plastic that, one of the businessmen here in the church ‑ he works in these kind of things and called a supplier in California – and they said it has a tensile strength of 57,000 pounds per square inch, but when he described the configuration, they said it would be double that, about 114,000 pounds per square inch.  We have a number of engineers in our church that are working to give me the exact strength requirements that would be necessary to cause that to break.  They have corroborated what was told by the supplier.  The top didn’t break off.  The bottom didn’t break off.  It broke across the middle, not up and down the lengthwise portion.  And our engineers said that the power required to do that is astronomical.  They said you could drop it from a ten‑story building and that would not happen.

It just split like lightning had hit it across the middle.  In fact it even jagged kind of like lightning.  It didn’t split at any joint where anything was fastened together, it was just across the middle.  They said that, given enough force, they could explain a lengthwise split, but they cannot even conceive of this.

I felt like the Holy Spirit showed me that was because there were two things that were happening.  First of all, he did not want his church to just be pulpit‑led with a two‑caste system of clergy and laity, but that what he was doing was going to cause his church to be mobilized again back into the ministry that he’s called all of us to be involved in, and I’ve preached that for years, but you know how it is ‑ the people get involved in their stuff.  The second thing is that he was changing the order of the ministry here in our church, and that we were moving to a different level.  It was as though the old pulpit was no longer adequate for what God was going to be doing.  And basically brother, that’s the story.

We had one service that day, and the service literally never ended.  It went all the way through the day until 2 am.  It had started at 8:30 am.  We decided to have church the next night, and I didn’t want to be presumptuous, but we went on a nightly basis on that order, just announcing one night at a time, and as we got deeper into the week I could begin to see that God was doing something that was probably going to be more extended.  So we took Monday and Tuesday night away and I added services Wednesday through Sunday.  There have been numerous healings.  The evangelist didn’t speak at all that Sunday.  In fact, the entire week he spoke maybe twenty minutes.  There’s been a really deep call of God to repentance.  People come in and they just fall on their faces.

Manifestations of God

There have been angelic visitations.   We have a school, and there’s a Catholic girl that teaches in the school.  Her sister is a member of our church and her sister is Spirit‑filled.  They had an angelic visitation, this Catholic teacher did, in her classroom, that was seen by both the teacher and the students.  It frightened her so badly that she went home and got her rosary and it’s in the auditorium right now (she gave it up).

We know of four tumors that have completely disappeared.  One lady had a tumor about 2 1/2 inches in diameter, and was going to have to have surgery.  It just ruptured, bled, dried up, and fell off.  And there have been several others ‑ tumors just turned black and fell off and left little white scars.  These were external tumors.

There was a man with a sleeping disorder that literally would go days without sleep and sometimes even weeks, and instantly he was healed.  A lady with a digestive ailment that she’s had for 25 years since the age of five (she’s 30) and had to have special medical treatment, was instantly healed.

None of these are people that we had laid hands on to pray for these things to happen.  We didn’t even know about it.  They just started calling in.  . . .  God sovereignly moving, and we’ve had nothing to do with it.  You and I come from similar backgrounds and can trace some of our history back to Azusa and I’ve often read about William Seymour, and I can understand him praying with his head in the apple crate.  But I’ve read that when he spoke that he would sometimes put a bag over his head with two holes cut for his eyes, and for the first time I understand why.  When God shows up, there’s absolutely no contribution that you could make.  Any human addition is actually a subtraction.

We’re just having a sovereign move of God.  They baptized for an hour Sunday morning and half an hour again Sunday evening and once again Sunday the services just ‑ they never ended.  People are staying until 2 am in the morning on some nights and there are all kind of angelic visitations and healings and things that are happening.  As I said, our church was not given to manifestations, but there are people that when God has been on them have been intoxicated for 10 days.

It started in our staff and then just from there just spread like fire.  We’ve had altar calls where, it hasn’t turned completely evangelistic yet.  There’s strong intercession and repentance now.  But there was one service where there were a lot of unsaved people and the evangelist spoke maybe ten or fifteen minutes and gave an altar call and we had several hundred instantly surge forward.

Just to be honest, it’s the most disruptive thing I’ve ever experienced, and I’ve preached revivals 18 1/2 years.  I know how to have revivals, but I don’t know how to handle a move of God.  . . .  They’re two different things.

I was supposed to have had a gospel singer this past Sunday night, and he was in town and I tried to reach him.  He was scheduled to be at another church pastored by a friend of mine Sunday morning, and when he finally got in town I spoke with him and told him we could not have him, and explained why.  I just was very candid and said if we were not having a sovereign move of God, and God was not doing anything that exceptional and you’re just having church, that he could have been a great addition.  But with what God was doing, there wasn’t anybody that could add anything, and so I started calling around to try and place him, and I was astonished at how many churches in Houston had begun to experience something.  I called one friend the same Sunday morning that this happened here.  They had a similar invasion of the presence of God. . . .

William Seymour was from Houston and left our city because he was discouraged with the racism and the sectarianism, and at the invitation of the Nazarene pastor – the lady in Los Angeles – he went there.  And we believe, and I’ve preached and taught, our church and our minister friends, and shared it with numbers in the area that we believe that there’s an unfulfilled mandate that God has for this city.  Hebrews says when once God gives a promise, that promise remains until someone receives it or claims that.  Isaiah said his word that is given ‑ it’s a created force ‑ it never returns void or empty.  And we think that Azusa was supposed to have happened here. . . .  And so we’ve tried to encourage our people to believe for a supernatural visitation, and we’re just absolutely thrilled.

That’s exactly where we are.  I walk in, but there’s been absolutely no structure to the service.  We had a great choir.  We’re a multi‑ethnic congregation.  A Brooklyn Tabernacle kind of sound, if you’re familiar with that.  Great worship and praise.  Sunday morning there wasn’t a choir member standing on the platform.  They were all scattered like logs all over the platform.  And we go in ‑ they begin to play, to lead us into the presence of the Lord, and they play very softly.  Because of our background, usually our worship is very strong, very dynamic, a lot of energy.  Not any more.  It’s like you’re afraid to even lift your voice;  even the notes on the piano they want to play very gently and then the Lord sweeps in.  Five nights last week I wasn’t even able to receive an offering.

I mean, when he begins to move there’s not one thing you can do.  You just get out of the way and let him work. . . . Billy Graham has said concerning Houston that he would rather preach in any city in the world than here, because the churches are so divided.  But I’m seeing a tremendous hunger among God’s people.  How this has gotten out, I don’t know.  I have no idea, but immediately, we started having people from all over this place come in.  There are pastors flying in now from various states.  But people from our city, and not many pastors yet.  Some have come.  But I don’t know where the Lord will take all of this.  When his presence has come so close, you’re afraid to even exert any preference and say, “this is what I want You to do,” you just back away and say, “whatever you want, God.”

We’ve cancelled everything that we had planned  We have a lot of outside activities.  We have 122 ministries within the church that have helped our church to grow, and these ministries were primarily either for getting people here or holding people once they’ve converted. . . .  But we have at this point‑‑I was telling our staff‑‑they were asking, “are we going to have Christmas musicals and Childrens’ pageants ever?”  And we do a big passion play every year that brings in thousands and thousands of people.  And I asked them, “Why do we do all of this?” and they said, “Well, we want people to come here so they can encounter God.”  I said, “Look at what’s happening.  We’ve got people storming in here that we’ve never seen, never heard of, never talked to.  And God’s doing it in a way that is so far superior to what we could do that whatever we’ve got going on.  We’re cancelling everything,” and that’s literally what we’ve done.  There hasn’t been a single objection.  That’s what amazes me.

I think that this is probably going to end up ‑ whatever this season is that the Holy Spirit is bringing us through in terms of our commitment to him and the deep searching of our own hearts – it has the feeling at this point like it’s building toward even a greater evangelistic outpouring.

There’s a big difference in renewal and revival.  You know, I had the same skepticism of the laughter.  I was raised in a classical Pentecostal background.  I saw that from time to time, but the latest thing ‑ I just ‑ something inside of me just had a difficult time with it.  And [now, in our church, after this visitation] there are people that are laughing like crazy now, and, I mean, all of this stuff I said that I had reservations about and didn’t particularly care to see, I mean it’s just as though God has said, “This is My Church.  It’s not yours.”  And I see the reality of it now.  I think it’s going to end up turning strongly evangelistic.  It has that feeling and a lot of people are coming and being saved each night.  There are many being saved, and there’s not even really an altar call made that distinguishes between people that are already saved ‑ that just need renewal and those that need conversion [because] it’s just so intense right now.

 Great changes

Rose Moon, from Christian Tabernacle, added these comments on the Awakening e-mail early in 1997:

God began moving us into a level of deep repentance and intercession for three months.  The services lost most all recognisable form for that period of time.  The preacher and the evangelist could not preach and the choir could not sing unless God allowed them.  No one could ‘perform’ as before.  The awesome fear of God came over most who experienced this.  As they tried to preach or sing, they either would end up on the floor, rooted to their seats, laughing or crying as the Spirit moved.  After three months God began to give new direction through the preaching of the word and the choir began to sing again, although there are still many times when the Spirit of the Lord moves in and changes everything that had been planned for that service.

Great changes in individuals have taken place in all those in leadership and most of the others that not only has lasted but continue to increase.  The most pronounced changes are sincere humility, a love and a hunger for God and his Word, boldness, freedom and power to minister or witness from the pastors and staff through most of the rest of the church.

Our Sunday and Wednesday services are powerful.  There have been many in every service who have been saved.  It is unusual now if people are not being baptised at the end of those services.  Thursday and Friday services are for worshipping and soaking in the presence of the Lord.  Every service has been different but he always shows up and is continuing to bring deep changes, healings and deliverances.  Many truly miraculous events have taken place from that first Sunday until now.  Most of the physical healings have taken place with no one laying hands on those persons.  They were healed by just being in God’s Presence during the services.  I will share a few of them:

1. On the first Sunday, one woman had a cancer fall off her.  Many since then have come to the pastor with similar stories.  Some have been healed of internal cancers with confirmations from their doctors.

2. The week before Thanksgiving one of our members became very ill and had to be taken to the hospital.  He had severe abdominal pains.  His colon had ruptured in four places and his abdominal cavity was filled with infection.  The doctors never expected him to leave the hospital alive.  With the church praying, he improved enough to go home.  He was scheduled for surgery the week before Christmas to replace 3 inches of colon.  He went in for the surgery and was placed under anaesthesia.  The doctors made new pictures of the colon before surgery.  Then without operating, they went out to his wife who was in the waiting area.  They were shaking their heads, causing her to fear the worst.  Instead they said that the new pictures showed a completely whole, normal colon.  There would be no surgery.  Her husband was most surprised when he woke up with no pain or incision.  God had healed him.

3. One 8 years old boy had been tested by a specialist the school referred them to for hearing because he was doing poorly in his schoolwork.  Because of an early childhood illness, one ear had a 70% loss of hearing in one ear, causing the other ear to only have a 40% hearing capacity.  They wanted him to be placed in special education classes and be taught sign language.  He was scheduled to be tested by a hearing specialist the school had recommended.  His mother asked one of the young men to pray for him during one of the ministry times.  About a week later she thought she noticed a difference in her son’s responses.  She took him to the specialist for testing.  His hearing was found to be completely normal.  Pastor Heard asked them to share in the 8:30 a.m.  Sunday early service.  After they did Pastor Heard asked those who had hearing problems to come for prayer.  He had the boy and his mother pray for those.  Of those who came forward, 3 had their hearing restored that morning.

4.  About 2 weeks ago a man, whom the Pastor Heard knows, testified a skin cancer had fallen off his face.  It had been there for about 2 years.  He had been scheduled for surgery.  One Sunday morning Pastor Heard shared that he felt there were cancers and growths that were going to fall off.  The next morning the man felt an itching sensation and reached up to touch the area where the cancer was and it fell off in his hand.  The skin underneath was pink and smooth.

5.  About 1 month ago, Pastor Heard shared his story.  In May of 1994, he fell to his knees while preaching a sermon.  He was taken to the emergency room of a hospital.  The doctors discovered he had a congenital heart defect that he would have to live with the rest of his life.  He has lived with that until the latest check‑up in February.  The doctor ran the dye tests and came in to tell him his heart was completely normal.  Pastor Heard asked the doctor, “Do you mean normal for me or for someone without an abnormal heart condition?” The doctor replied his heart was completely normal as it should be.  There was no longer a congenital condition.  They did not even give him a stress test.  No hands were laid on specifically for his heart condition.  As others have been, he was healed by being in this Presence of the Lord.  There have been many dramatic inner healings and deliverances of some who have been under a doctor’s care for a long time.

It is wonderful that our church is not the only one experiencing this.  There are churches all over the greater Houston area that are experiencing this including Baptist, Assembly of God, Methodist, Church of Christ, Nazarene and many others.  We are just praying for an increase of what God is doing.

Bonnke
Reinhard Bonnke

German missionary to Africa, Reinhard Bonnke (1940-2019) founded Christ For All Nations (CFAN) which now ministers to millions.

Converted at nine, he had a missionary zeal.  As a teenager, Reinhard saw Johannesburg in South Africa in a vision of a map of Africa.  At 19 he headed off to the Bible College of Wales to train as a missionary, even though he couldn’t speak English.  Three months later he was preaching in English!  There he learned practical principles of living by faith.

After a short pastorate in Germany where he married Anna, they left for German Pentecostal missionary work in Africa.  Working as traditional missionaries from 1967 to 1974 in Maseru, the capital of the small landlocked country of Lesotho, they saw meagre results.

The early days in Lesotho (1974)

Near the end of that time Reinhard’s interpreter broke down during his message at a healing meeting one Sunday morning and sank weeping to the floor because of God’s awesome presence.  Waiting for the interpreter to recover Reinhard ‘heard’ the Lord speak ‘words’ which amazed him: “My Words in your mouth are just as powerful as My Words in My own mouth.”

The ‘voice’ repeated the sentence.  He ‘saw’ it like a movie in Scripture – Jesus told the disciples to speak in faith and it would happen.  “I suddenly realized that the power was not in the mouth – the power was in the Word,” said Reinhard.

Then, when the interpreter had recovered enough to speak, as he was preaching Reinhard ‘heard’ the Spirit say, “Call those who are completely blind and speak the Word of Authority.”

He did.  About six blind people stood.  He boldly proclaimed, “Now I am going to speak with the authority of God and you are going to see a white man standing before you.  Your eyes are going to open.”

Taking a deep breath Reinhard shouted: “In the name of Jesus, blind eyes open!”

The power of his voice jolted even those on the stage.  It felt as though a flaming bolt of lightning was let loose in the building.  His voice was still resonating against the bare brick walls when there was another shout.  This time it was the shriek of a woman’s voice.  What she screamed shattered the silence that hung over the congregation: “I can see!  I can see!”

She had been totally blind for years.  The other blind people also saw.  The place erupted in excited cheers.  A woman handed her crippled boy through the milling crowd to Reinhard who sensed the power of God on the boy and watched amazed as his crippled legs shook and straightened.  He was healed.  The meeting went for hours as people screamed, shouted, danced and sang.

At the end of 1974, Reinhard relocated to Johannesburg and established Christ for All Nations (CFAN).  Early in January, when he was ill, he had a vision of Jesus similar to the Joshua’s vision (Joshua 5:13-15).  He wrote:  “I was very sick.  I didn’t think I would make it.  I went to doctors.  Nothing helped.  I was crying to God: ‘Lord what are you doing?  What is your plan?’  One afternoon I retired to my study.  A thirst for prayer came over me and I was hardly on my knees when I saw a most wonderful vision.  I saw the son of God stand in front of me in full armour, like a general.  The armour saw shining like the sun and burning like fire.  It was tremendous and I realised that the Lord of Hosts had come.  I threw myself at His feet.  I laughed and I cried … I don’t know for how long, but when I got up I was perfectly healed.”

When Reinhard flew to Gaberone in Botswana to buy time on radio there the Lord told him to hire the 10,000 seater sports stadium for a crusade.  The local Pentecostal pastor who agreed to help prepare for the crusade was amazed.  He had only 40 in his congregation!

The crusade in April 1974 with Reinhard’s evangelist friend Pastor Ngidi started in a hall which could seat 800.  On the first night 100 attended.  Healings happened every night, abnd people fell to the floor overwhelmed.  That was new to Reinhard.

By the end of the first week 2,000 people were packed into the hall.  So they moved into the stadium!  Thousands attended.  People were saved and healed every night and over 500 people were baptised in water within two weeks.

One night in the stadium, the Holy Spirit urged Reinhard to pray for people to be baptised in the Holy Spirit.  So he asked an African co-worker to give a message on the Holy Spirit.  Reinhard felt dissatisfied with talk because it didn’t mention tongues.

About 1,000 people responded to the call to be baptised in the Spirit.  As soon as they raised their hands they were all flattened shouting and praising God in new languages on the ground.  Reinhard had never seen anything like that before.  It continued to happen in his crusades.

Reinhard used an enormous tent which could seat 30,000 people.  Then the crowds grew so large no tent could hold them.  Some of CFAN crusades in Africa have reached huge open air crowds of 600,000 to 800,000 people and even over 1 million.

Iris Ministries has planted thousands of churches, mostly in Africa, and cares for over 10,000 children daily.

*

1 Corinthians 13 serves as a significant reminder of what is most important in missions. If we speak the local language fluently, operate in signs and wonders and willingly sacrifice our possessions and even our lives for the gospel, it is still worth absolutely nothing without love.

When we are deeply rooted in the Father’s love for us, our love for him and for people will overflow in Spirit-empowered ministry that brings transformation to individuals and nations.

– Heidi Baker

The Primacy of Love

“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.”  —I Cor 13:1-3 NIV

Love in not a concept or theory, or even an important part of missions, but the center of everything we do and why we do it. It is the very heartbeat of our movement. So what does love look like? Love has a face. It looks like something. It looks like someone. When we are motivated by love and are confident that “the God of the impossible” lives inside of us, we can do anything and go anywhere, and nothing will be too difficult. This is the great mystery: that God has chosen to inhabit and posses little jars of clay with His lavish love so that we can spread His fragrance to the darkest ends of the earth, and to every person we meet each day. When we know how extravagantly loved we are by the Father, we are able to lay down our lives in obedience with great joy. As ministers and missionaries, this is the life of joy to which we have been called.

The Father’s Delight

“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear.”   —1 John 4:18 NIV

As a missionary I have been beaten up, stoned, shot at, shipwrecked, had knives to my throat, been thrown in jail, slandered, mocked and ridiculed many times over, but I’m not afraid. I am not ashamed of the Gospel. I have known persecution and suffering, and counted it all joy! I have walked into the middle of gangs armed with guns and knives and told them to stop what they were doing, in the name of Jesus, and they dropped their knives and said sorry! They were surprised to see that I wasn’t afraid of them. From where does that kind of confidence come?

One day I had a vision of the Father and He was smiling at me. I saw that He took great delight in me and His smile undid me.  He picked me up and danced with me all around a field. He loved the dance. We pirouetted. We leaped across the field. He danced and smiled at me.

I was completely undone by His love for me! I know that I am totally loved by my Father. This is the place from which my confidence flows. My fearlessness comes from knowing Him and knowing His delight in me. When the Father tells you that He thinks you’re awesome, you’ll go to the ends of the earth without hesitation.

We are also willing to hear his discipline when needed because we know He loves us.  Likewise, a wife who is in love will obey her husband.  It’s hard for a wife to obey a mean, grouchy husband, but when a woman is in love, she doesn’t have to be told to submit.  She will do anything to please the one with whom she is in love.  Obedience comes out of knowing you’re loved.  When you know you’re loved, you will go anywhere He sends you and do anything with joy.

Happy Missionary

People often say to me that it must be a huge sacrifice to work with the poor, to spend time in the slums and be exposed to malaria, cholera and dysentery.  My response is to laugh.  To me there is no sacrifice at all!  It is a joy because I have given my life for the One I love.  I find joy in being a missionary and doing what I am called to do.  I am a happy missionary!  To me, the poorest villages where I minister are simply wonderful! They are the most glorious place on earth because Jesus is there.  When you get a revelation of the Father’s heart for you, you love whatever He tells you to do and obedience is joyful.  He rips away your fear and you are able to do things that you wouldn’t normally do. And things that would usually bother you no longer do, because you’re moving out of love.

I Will Not Leave You as Orphans

As a ministry God has called us to take care of orphans and widows, but we never call our centers orphanages because the Father never leaves us as orphans (John 14:18 NIV).  He adopts us into His family and we become sons and daughters.

Sometimes people come to visit us and they expect to see ragged misery, but instead they are surprised to meet hundreds of happy children.  They wonder how an orphan can carry so much joy.  Our children know that they have been adopted and are no longer alone. They are in a family and live lives full of love and joy, knowing that they are sons and daughters.  In fact, they get to minister the Father-heart to our visitors.  These are kids that the world says are cast-off orphans.  And yet, generally they are a delight to be around. Jesus pours His extravagant love through them.

Baker Heidi children sleepAccess to Heaven

Every weekend some of our children come over to our house for a sleepover.  One day I was watching them as they ran in to our house, opened up the fridge and dumped the ice trays out all over the kitchen!  We don’t always have electricity, so when it’s on it’s very exciting because that means we all have ice.  It is such a delight for the children to have ice, and they get very excited about it.  My children didn’t come in and ask politely if they could have some ice.  They simply knew that they had access to the fridge!  They weren’t even that sweet or tidy about getting it.  They made a huge mess.  As I watched them eat the ice I was thrilled because I knew that they were confident that this was their home and that they had access to the things in our house.  The Spirit of adoption had healed their orphan hearts.

Like them, I am starting to understand that we have access to heaven’s resources.  Whenever I preach the Gospel in the bush of Mozambique, I always ask if there is anybody deaf or mute in the village.  When they bring the deaf-mutes to us for prayer, we are always confident that we have access to their healing because we know that we are co-heirs with Christ and that we are seated with Him in heavenly places.  We want to take that which God says is ours and release it in this world. As I lay my hands on them, they begin to hear and speak, and the village starts to come to Jesus.

When you understand who you are, then you will start taking risks.  But if you have an orphan spirit, you will be too afraid to try in case you fail.  Sons and daughters are able to flow in great humility and great authority at the same time.  They are confident that they have access to the Father’s house.  They know that they are His so they are able to suffer without fear.

I have watched our children preach the Gospel when they were being stoned, while visitors locked themselves in a truck!  They are mostly unafraid because they know they are children of the Most High God, loved and accepted.  They often fearlessly lay their hands on the blind and their eyes open up. They take hold of crippled legs and the cripples start to run!  We cheer them on as we watch them move in Kingdom power.  We even cheer them on when they fall short of the Kingdom.

The Father wants to embrace each one of us and tell us who we are until we believe Him and begin to move in unstoppable boldness.  Ministry and missions have to flow out of this place of confidence because we can only change the world when we understand who we are and who He is in us.  When we really understand that we are sent out as sons and daughters and not just servants and workers, it will change the way we minister and do missions.  We will flow out of radical love and fearless confidence.  We will move out of a place of rest rather than striving, and we will go long-term, without burning out.  We will finish well.

Abiding in Love

“I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”  —John 15:5 NAS

How do we bear abundant fruit?  How do we birth revival and see whole cultures transformed, and nations bow at the feet of Jesus?  We can’t make revival happen.  We cannot create it.  We cannot force fruit to grow, just as a branch cannot bear fruit by itself (John 15:4).

The only way it’s able to bear fruit is by remaining in the vine. We cannot bear fruit that lasts unless we learn how to abide in Jesus.  It’s as we worship Him and enjoy His love that He creates the fruit.  We cannot create fruit, but we can live in intimacy!  A tree produces fruit by simply abiding, not striving.

Many of those who come to visit our ministry ask about our method and strategy for growing thousands of churches within a few years.  My husband, Rolland, and I start laughing because we know that we cannot produce anything ourselves.  We do not have a ten-point plan on how to bear fruit.  Fruit only comes from the One who is altogether perfect!  Our desire in life is to live inside of the heart of Jesus and to love Him. We don’t love Him to get fruit, but fruit always flows when there is intimacy.  When we abide in Jesus, the true vine, it just happens (John 15:1).

Our goal is not to be the leading church growth movement on the planet.  Our one desire is to be in love with Jesus, to love Him well and to abide in that love until it flows from us and touches every man, woman and child we meet each day.  We are on the mission field primarily to learn how to love.  That’s it.  It’s so simple that it scares people.  We don’t have anything else.  We didn’t just come here as teachers, but also as students of love, desperate to know how to reveal the heartbeat of Jesus to this dying world. We are just starting to learn.  My daily cry to God is, “More love, Lord!”

Our national brothers and sisters often lead the way.  They teach us what love and generosity look like.

Pruning the Vine

“Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit.”   —John 15:2 NAS

Abiding in Jesus also means we allow Him to cut off every branch in us that bears no fruit.  Out of His great love the Father cuts away everything that isn’t fruitful in our lives.  Sometimes it hurts, but the pruning is so that we will bear even more fruit.

When I was in Toronto once, I was on the floor seven days and seven nights under the power of the Holy Spirit.  I was unable to move in my own strength.  I couldn’t even lift my head, and I had to be carried everywhere, even to the restroom!  I couldn’t eat or drink by myself. It was almost like being a quadriplegic.  The Body of Christ had to take complete care of me.  When I was thirsty, the Lord had to speak to someone to come and pour water down my throat.  This was really difficult for someone as active as me, and I felt like I was going to die.  The Lord told me that’s exactly how He wanted me!  Dead.  He would then raise me from the dead.  During this time God was wooing me deeper in to His heart and showing me how I could do nothing without Him, and I could do nothing without His Body.  I was learning about dependence on Him and inter-dependence in His beloved Bride.  We were all created to be in family and can do nothing without each other.

On day three, as I was lying on the floor at church, I felt a hand on my chest and liquid love pulsated through me. I was completely undone, as I had never felt love like this before.  It was like a rolling river going through me, over and over again. I thought that the person who had his hand on me was the most anointed person on the planet.  Later Rolland told me that no one had been anywhere near me during that time.  The hand on my chest had been the hand of the Lord Jesus Himself! He was teaching me about His burning heart of passion.

Fruit Flows from Intimacy

At that time we only had three churches.  One of them was for our children and staff, so attendance was mandatory.  But after being stuck to the floor for seven days under the heavy, weighty glory of God, when I got up and went out, revival happened!  A team grew up around us.  After that experience of intimate love, fruit just started happening through our little lives and through our Mozambican and missionary family.  I began to see every miracle I had ever dreamed of.  Then the Lord spoke to me and told me He wanted more of my time.  He had to chop away the things that were not important to Him.  Where I minister in Africa, we face many pressures and long queues every day.

The needs seem overwhelming at times, so we have to contend for time in the secret place.  Without the Presence none of it means anything.  His Presence is what we live for, and ministry only makes sense when it flows out of this place of abiding. I determined to give Jesus even more of my time and not give in to the constant pressures around me.

I am learning that in the anointing we can produce more fruit in a day than a lifetime of striving and trying.  This is a place I must contend for daily.

Hearts Full of Passion and Compassion

Even though I had been a diligent missionary for twenty-nine years and preached the Gospel for thirty-three years, He still had to prune many things in my life to take me deeper into the secret place of His heart.  Some of my favourite times are walking and snorkelling with Jesus.  Just Him and me.  Fruit comes out of a laid-down love affair with Jesus.  God is not just concerned about how much we can sacrifice for Him by being on the mission field.  He is not impressed by how miserable we can be.  It doesn’t earn us brownie points in heaven!

He is concerned that our hearts are full of passion for Him and full of compassionate love for our neighbour.  A heart that is full of passion will do anything, go anywhere and withhold nothing.  This is how Jesus wants to send us out into His harvest field: full of passion and compassion.  He wants to captivate our hearts with love until they burn with holy fire and we walk the earth as the fragrance of Jesus.  I won’t go for any reason other than love.

What Does Love Look Like?

To be the love of Christ to those around us, we have to ask ourselves this question: What does love look like?  What does it look like, specifically, in the culture we are called to reach?  In my nation, Mozambique, where there is much suffering due to clean water shortage, loving a village looks like drilling a fresh water well so that people no longer have to walk for hours in the blazing heat to get a cup of clean water.

Loving those who are hungry and dressed in rags looks like food and new clothes.  However, this wouldn’t be a good demonstration of love to those living in London or Seoul, where there is clean water running out of taps constantly and most have wonderful clothing.  Most people in the first-world don’t lack severely in a material way.  They’re not malnourished, barefooted and dressed in rags.  We need to ask Jesus to give us eyes to see what their needs are.  And reach out to them with His heart in their poverty.  Even though they may not be literally hungry, they may be starved of love and acceptance.  To the lonely and rejected, love looks like acceptance and friendship.  It may look like a hug or a word of encouragement.  In the busy cities of the world, like Hong Kong, love may look like taking the time to sit with someone long enough to hear their story so that they know they matter.  Love may look like you sharing a meal with them in the middle of a busy day.

This should be our daily question: what does it look like to manifest the love of Christ to those that I meet today?

Teach Me How To Love!

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us.  And we ought to lay our lives down for our brothers.”  – 1John 3:16 NIV

When we lived in London, we spent a lot of time on the streets ministering to the homeless.  During this time I met a dying alcoholic named Patrick.  Nearly every day for two years I would tell him that I loved him and that Jesus loved him.  And nearly every day he would get really close to my face, look straight in to my eyes and tell me to go to hell.  I kept bringing him food and telling him that I loved him, and I kept crying out to Jesus to teach me how to communicate His love to this man.  One of my constant prayers is for the Lord to teach me to love.  I don’t want any other thing but to live inside the heart of Jesus and to manifest His love to a dying world.  Nearly every day for years, I would visit Patrick and tell him about love.  Often he would spit at me.   Sometimes he would take my food and sometimes he would throw it away.

Reduced to Love

“Let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.”    —1John 3:18 NIV

One day as I was out on the streets again, a woman I was ministering to began to beat me.  She was a very angry and broken person.  She had been raped sixteen times and had spent a year in the hospital with a broken pelvis.  She was a lesbian and dressed like a man.

I often told her that I loved her and that Jesus loved her as I held her, fed her and ministered to her.  One day she was very drunk and stoned.  She was beating me and pushing me, but all I could feel was overwhelming love for her.  When I looked at her she was beautiful.

Jean had a broken bottle and she said she was going to rip open my face and throw me in the river Thames.  I told her how amazingly beautiful she was!  I knew that she too was called to adoption and was predestined to be a daughter of God.  As she told me that she was going to kill me, all I could see in her was beauty.  I told her I loved her.  After some time I began to feel very tired and thought I would either faint or die.  I told God that whatever happened I wanted His love to be known in that place.  Patrick was watching all this happen, and eventually he said he was calling the police.  I told him not to because I didn’t want Jean to go to jail yet again.  Then that man, who for two years had told me to go to hell, came and rescued me from her!  For two whole years I had loved him, but he couldn’t see, understand or feel that love because there was too much pain in his own heart.  Patrick grabbed me away from Jean, started sobbing on that street, and said, “For years you told me Jesus loved me.  Now I’ve seen His love and I want Him.”  We just held each other as he fell apart.  He held me and I held him.  In his dirty clothes and his scabies, lice and alcoholic state, I just held him.  He met Jesus that day because He saw love.

I believe we have complicated the Gospel.  Jesus wants to reduce us to the simplicity of love.  My cry is to be hidden inside God’s heart so fully that I manifest His glory and never touch it.  I want to be wholly hidden inside Him and love like Him; manifesting His love tangibly to the lost, the dying and the broken.  I want to be His fragrance everywhere I go and love, not just with words, but in action and truth.  A week after Jean tried to kill me, she came to my house with a dozen roses and said, “I’m sorry I tried to kill you.  I want Jesus.”  What a wonderful day!  She got set free from all her anger and pain.  That day she came home to the Father’s house.

Tenacious Love

Often we want plans and strategies to reach the multitudes.  But love looks like something and revival has a face.  Sometimes it looks like stopping for the same person, every day, for years, even if they keep telling you to go to hell.  Love looks like laying down our lives for our friends and believing that they are lovely even when they don’t seem lovely.  Jesus tells us that there is no greater love than to lay our life down for our friends.  In love He stretched out His hands on the cross and gave Himself freely.  He longs to fill His church with this same kind of love.  Love that compels us to lay our lives down for our friends, so that we love them, even when they spit on us, reject us and persecute us.  We love them when they are nice to us and when they are mean to us.  And we keep loving them, whatever it costs, and never give up!  If we love we cannot lose!  This is how we reveal God’s heart to this broken world.  Jesus wants to transform His Bride until she so radiates His tenacious love that no one can resist it!  I will not say that this is not difficult.  There are many days I don’t’ feel like loving at all.  I have failed many times.  But He keeps on showing me the point.  He keeps on forgiving my shortcomings and drawing me to His heart.

We often hear about revival in terms of multitudes, but I believe that the face of revival is stopping for the one that God puts in front of us every day.  If each one of us stopped long enough to see the brokenness of the one in front of us, and ministered the love of Christ to them, it would look like the revival of love and power we are praying for and longing to see.

The Church That Loves

“This is my commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.  Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.”   —John 15:12-13 NAS

One of our pastors in Mozambique, Pastor Sithole, ministered the love of Jesus tirelessly in many villages day after day.  He would walk and pray and pour out his life for love.  This angered some people of another faith.  They hated him for spreading the Good News.  So one day they came to his house and told him that he would no longer spread the name of Jesus.  They chopped off His tongue and cut off his lips so that he would no longer speak of His name. They chopped off his feet and told him that he would no longer walk and preach this message.  They chopped off his hands and told him that he would no longer feed people.  His wife and six children watched as this terrible thing was happening.  Then they chopped off his head.  In our movement hundreds of people have been raised from the dead, but Pastor Sithole wasn’t.  His cousin, Pastor Surpresa Sithole, one of our international Iris directors, called us.  The two of them had been very close.  Together we cried and prayed on the phone. As we wept we asked God what love looked like in this situation?  After we talked, Pastor Surpresa got in his truck and drove all day and all night with a huge sound system to the village where his cousin had been martyred.  The police had caught one of the murderers, so when he got there he asked for the murderer to be let out of jail.  Next he called the whole village together and said, “You may cut off our tongues, but you will never stop us from speaking about this message of love.  You may cut off our feet, but hundreds will run behind us.  You may cut off our hands, but we will still cry, ‘We love you, we love you, we love you!’  Because Jesus reached out His hands and He died for love.”  Pastor Surpresa shared this radical, ceaseless, endless love with the whole village, and with the very man that had tortured and murdered his own cousin.  The police said we were a crazy church and a crazy movement.  But they also said that we were the church that loves.  And thousands of people from another faith bowed their knee to Jesus that day because of love.

Radical fruit can only flow out of a radical life of obedient love and intimacy with Jesus.  What would you do for love?  Where would you go for love?  What would you give for love’s sake?  Wholehearted lovers will do anything and pay any price.  Nothing is too difficult for them because they are totally abandoned. Not all of us are called to die for Jesus, but all of us are called to live for Him.  Even if just one person reading this really understands what I am communicating, they would become a nation shaker. I am only a baby on this journey, but I know where I want to go.  If we would really live a life that is so radically obedient for love’s sake that there is no “No” left in us, there would be so much fruit that whole cities would be turned upside down.

Possessed by Love

As missionaries our primary job is to love. I always tell our staff that it doesn’t matter what we do or how much we achieve in a day.  What matters is how we went about it.  Did we go through the day loving those we met?  Did we treat the beggar asking for money with dignity?  Did we take the time to hear what he had to say?  Did we treat the children with patience when they misbehaved?  Did we stop long enough in our busy day to see those in front of us and look into their eyes?  If missions is just about programs and projects, then we need to stop, because what we do will be like a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.  If missions is about anything other than love, we need to stop and have more time in the secret place with Jesus.

Many of you may wonder who you are and what your purpose and calling is.  My prayer for you is that you move deeper inside God’s heart and become fully inhabited by love, because love is our highest calling and our greatest gift.  We can spend ourselves in service to the poor and give our lives to missions, but if we have not loved we have gained nothing.  But if each one of us stops to love the one in front of us, each day, we will see the revival of power we long for spread to the ends of the earth.

An article in Renewal Journal 16: Vision:

Argentina’s largest prison is located in the town of Los Olmos, less than 100 kilometers south of Buenos Aires, the capital of the country.  It is a maximum security facility that houses nearly 3,000 inmates.  One of the greatest and most dramatic miracles in modern history has taken place inside the walls of that prison.

Until a few years ago, the prison was in total chaos.  Crime was rampant.   Riots, murders, sexual abuse, extortion and male prostitution were commonplace.  The prison was so out of control that by default the authorities turned over the daily running of the place to the mafia and drug dealers serving time there.  These de facto leaders chose to reside on the fourth of five floors, which came to be known as the “elephant’s floor” since all the heavyweights lived there.  Can you imagine what this place became when the worst inmates were given the run of it? Even a Church of Satan was established on the premises and animal sacrifices were offered regularly.  Olmos – as the prison is commonly known – was so impregnable that pastors from the nearby towns had great difficulty getting inside its perimeter.

There is a tunnel that connects the outside world with the prison.  A local pastor reported that as he tried to get inside the prison, halfway through that tunnel he would become ill and had to be carried out.  Some inmates reported being tormented by demons which, according to those reports, literally materialized in their cells.  Satan was in control indeed.  However, it appears that the evil one made a gross miscalculation that eventually did him in.  This had to do with grace.  As you know, grace requires the pre-existence of sin and the greater the sin, the greater the grace available to the repentant sinner.  By those standards, Olmos was more than qualified.  This is how it came about:

Miracle begins: In the nearby town of La Plata, a well-known pastor was caught committing a crime and was sentenced to serve time—at Los Olmos! At first it appeared that Satan had won: his citadel remained impregnable and a church leader had been publicly disgraced.  But the pastor repented and cried out to God for a second chance.  And God is indeed the God of second chances.   God forgave him and filled him with the Holy Spirit.  Now this pastor was determined to see God bring good out of terrible evil.  Incensed with a passion for the lost and overwhelmed with gratitude to God for his grace, he became what I call “a spiritual kamikaze”.  In his attempt to preach the gospel to everyone around, he thrust himself with gusto into the very pit of hell.  He witnessed to the mafia dons, gang leaders, drug dealers and even to the Church of Satan priests! Like a kamikaze pilot, he gave up his life in order to cause the most damage possible to the enemy.

Very soon a small group of believers emerged.  What Satan must have thought as an impregnable place, now hosted an emerging Christian church.  I believe that the anxiety he must have felt about this led to his second miscalculation.  A persecution against the Christians was unleashed.  If persecution can be brutal in the outside world where existing laws, the possibility of help and refuge, and the availability of the media can somehow mitigate it, imagine the persecution inside a maximum security prison run by the ruthless and fearless.  However, God, was in control and the Biblical principle that whatever Satan plans for evil God turns around for good still held.

The persecution gave the Christian inmates legal grounds to request protection in the form of their own cell block — each cell block houses 42 inmates.  The authorities reluctantly agreed and granted the new Christians a cell block of their own on the worst floor.  The church was placed in the midst of his control and command center .  .  .  aware that their lives were at risk, the inmates organized themselves as a church.  The first order of business was a 40 day fast.  They also divided themselves into seven teams of six people each.  Each team was to stand guard every night from 11 pm to 5 am, working in pairs they prayed, read the Bible and moved from bed to bed interceding for each one of their sleeping Christian inmates.  After two hours they rotate tasks.  This approach became highly effective, not only in protecting their own perimeter but also in infiltrating Satan’s perimeter inside the prison.

In answer to those prayers, Juan Zucarelli, a pastor in town, felt led to apply for a job at the prison.  Zucarelli was interviewed by several officials, and all of them said, “We do not want you here, we hate you.  If you get the job, we may even hurt you.  Get lost!’ But Zucarelli persevered and against all odds—except God’s—he got the job.  As he connected with the emerging prison church, things began to happen.  They prayed for and were given one and a half hours a week on the prison radio station, which all inmates hear since the speaker cannot be turned down nor can the station be changed.  Very soon the weekly Gospel message began to make an impact on the prison population.  This, coupled with intense prayer activity in the Christian cell block, produced mass conversions.  Today 44 percent of the inmates are born again.

As soon as 42 new converts are admitted to the church, a cell block is made available for them to move in.  A resident pastor is appointed from among the inmates and the same routine of prayer, fasting and night vigils is instituted.

Since no money is allowed to circulate inside the prison, the inmates tithe from the care packages they receive from relatives.  Last year a town in Central Argentina was devastated by floods and the church in the prison was able to send relief by using the product of their tithes.  They fast twice a week and hold church services every day.

There are 19 cell blocks that occupy the entire fourth floor and 80% of the third floor.  Nearly 1,300 inmates have received Christ.  Recent unconfirmed reports state that the number of guards has been reduced from 300 to 30 as a result of behavior standards of the Christians.  Normally 50% of the inmates find themselves back in prison following their release.  Of the 604 released Christians, only three have returned – less than half of one percent!

During an International Institute which Harvest Evangelism holds in Argentina every fall, we (Army of Intercessors) organized a trip to the prison to meet with the inmates.  The prison chapel is too small to accommodate the growing number of believers, so they have removed all the furniture.  More than 800 inmates stand shoulder to shoulder except when they kneel to pray.  Their vibrant singing is incredibly moving.  One of the inmate pastors said to our group, ‘If you came to see prisoners, you have come to the wrong place.  We are free men, free indeed!’ Even though their bodies are in prison, they roam the heavenly places in prayer and intercession!

Cali, Columbia

For years Colombia has been the world’s biggest exporter of cocaine, sending between 700 hundred and 1,000 tons a year to the United States and Europe alone.  The Cali cartel, which controlled up to 70 percent of this trade, has been called the largest, richest and most well-organized criminal organization in history.  Employing a combination of bribery and threats, it wielded a malignant power that corrupted individuals and institutions alike.

Randy and Marcy MacMillan, copastors of the Communidad Christiana de Fe, have labored in Cali for more than 20 years.  At least 10 of these have been spent in the shadow of the city’s infamous drug lords.

Marcy inherited the family home of her late father, a former Colombian diplomat.  When illicit drug money began pouring into Cali in the 1980s, the Cocaine lords moved into the MacMillan’s upscale neighbourhood, buying up entire blocks of luxurious haciendas.  They modified these properties by installing elaborate underground tunnel systems and huge 30-foot (10-metre) walls to shield them from prying eyes-and stray bullets.  Video cameras encased in Plexiglas bubbles scanned the surrounding area continuously.  There were also regular patrols with guard dogs.

“These people were paranoid,” Randy recalls.  “They were exporting 500 million dollars worth of cocaine a month, and it led to constant worries about sabotage and betrayal.  They had a lot to lose.”

For this reason, the cartel haciendas were appointed like small cities.  Within their walls it was possible to find everything from airstrips and helicopter landing pads to indoor bowling alleys and miniature soccer stadiums.  Many also contained an array of gift boutiques, nightclubs and restaurants.

Whenever the compound gates swung open, it was to disgorge convoys of shiny black Mercedes automobiles.  As they snaked their way through the city’s congested streets, all other traffic would pull to the side of the road.  Drivers who defied this etiquette did so at their own risk.  Many were blocked and summarily shot.  As many as 15 people a day were killed in such a manner.  “You didn’t want to be at the same stoplight with them,” Randy summarized.

Having once been blocked in his own neighbourhood, Randy remembers the terror.  “They drew their weapons and demanded to see our documents.  I watched them type the information into a portable computer.  Thankfully the only thing we lost was some film.  I will always remember the death in their eyes.  These are people that kill for a living and like it.”

Rosevelt Muriel, director of the city’s ministerial alliance, also remembers those days.  “It was terrible.  If you were riding around in a car and there was a confrontation, you were lucky to escape with your life.  I personally saw five people killed in Cali.”

Journalists had a particularly difficult time.  They were either reporting on human camage – car bombs were going off like popcorn – or they were becoming targets themselves.  Television news anchor Adriana Vivas said that many journalists were killed for denouncing what the Mafia was doing in Colombia and Cali.  “Important political decisions were being manipulated by drug money.  It touched everything, absolutely everything.”

By the early 1990s, Cali had become one of the most thoroughly corrupt cities in the world.  Cartel interests controlled virtually every major institution – including banks, businesses,  politicians and law enforcement.

Like everything else in Cali, the church was in disarray.   Evangelicals were few and did not much care for each other.  “In those days,” Rosevelt Muriel recalls sadly, “the pastors’ association consisted of an old box of files that nobody wanted.  Every pastor was working on his own; no one wanted to join together.”

When pastor-evangelists Julio and Ruth Ruibal came to Cali in 1978, they were dismayed at the pervasive darkness in the city.   “There was no unity between the churches,” Ruth explained.  Even Julio was put off by his colleagues and pulled out of the already weak ministerial association.

Ruth relates that during a season of fasting the Lord spoke to Julio saying, “You don’t have the right to be offended.  You need to forgive.”  So going back to the pastors, one by one, Julio made things right.  They could not afford to walk in disunity – not when their city faced such overwhelming challenges.

Randy and Marcy MacMillan were among the first to join the Ruibals in intercession.  “We just asked the Lord to show us how to pray,” Marcy remembers.  And He did.  For the next several months they focused on the meagre appetite within the church for prayer, unity and holiness.  Realizing these are the very things that attract the presence of God, they petitioned the Lord to stimulate a renewed spiritual hunger, especially in the city’s ministers.

As their prayers began to take effect, a small group of pastors proposed assembling their congregations for an evening of joint worship and prayer.  The idea was to lease the city’s civic auditorium, the Colisco El Pueblo, and spend the night in prayer and repentance.  They would solicit God’s active participation in their stand against the drug cartels and their unseen spiritual masters.

Roping off most of the seating area, the pastors planned for a few thousand people.  And even this, in the minds of many, was overly optimistic.  “We heard it all,” said Rosevelt Muriel.  “People told us, ‘It can’t be done,’ ‘No one will come,’ ‘Pastors won’t give their support.’  But we decided to move forward and trust God with the results.”

When the event was finally held in May 1995, the nay-sayers and even some of the organizers were dumbfounded.  Instead of the expected modest turnout, more than 25,000 people filed into the civic auditorium – nearly half of the city’s evangelical population at the time!  At one point, Muriel remembers, “The mayor mounted the platform and proclaimed, ‘Cali belongs to Jesus Christ.’  Well, when we heard those words, we were energized.”  Giving themselves to intense prayer, the crowd remained until 6 o’clock the next morning.  The city’s famous all-night prayer vigil – the ‘vigilia’ – had been born.

Forty-eight hours after the event, the daily newspaper, El Pais, headlined, “No Homicides!”  For the first time in as long as anybody in the city could remember, a 24-hour period had passed without a single person being killed.  In a nation cursed with the highest homicide rate in the world, this was a newsworthy development.  Corruption also took a major hit when, over the next four months, 900 cartel-linked officers were fired from the metropolitan police force.

“When we saw these things happening,” Randy MacMillan exulted, “we had a strong sense that the powers of darkness were headed for a significant defeat.”

In the month of June, this sense of anticipation was heightened when several intercessors reported dreams in which angelic forces apprehended leaders of the Cali drug cartel.  Many interpreted this as a prophetic sign that the Holy Spirit was about to respond to the most urgent aspect of the church’s united appeal.  Intercessors were praying, and heaven was listening.  The seemingly invincible drug lords were about to meet their match.

“Within six weeks of this vision,” MacMillan recalls, “the Colombian government declared all-out war against the drug lords.”  Sweeping military operations were launched against cartel assets in several parts of the country.  The 6,500 elite commandos dispatched to Cali arrived with explicit orders to round up seven individuals suspected as the top leaders of the cartel.

“Cali was buzzing with helicopters,” Randy remembers.  “The airport was closed and there were police roadblocks at every entry point into the city.  You couldn’t go anywhere without proving who you were.”

Suspicions that the drug lords were consulting spirit mediums were confirmed when the federalés dragnet picked up Jorge Eliecer Rodriguez at the fortune-telling parlour of Madame Marlene Ballesteros, the famous ‘Pythoness of Cali’.   By August, only three months after God’s word to the intercessors, Colombian authorities had captured all seven targeted cartel leaders – Juan Carlos Arminez, Phanor Arizabalata, Julian Murcillo, Henry Loaiza, Jose Santacruz Londono and founders Gilberto and Miguel Roddguez.

Clearly stung by these assaults on his power base, the enemy lashed out against the city’s intercessors.  At the top of his hit list was Pastor Julio Ceasar Ruibal, a man whose disciplined fasting and unwavering faith was seriously eroding his manoeuvring room.

On December 13, 1995, Julio rode into the city with his daughter Sarah and a driver.  Late for a pastors’ meeting at the Presbyterian Church, he motioned to his driver to pull over.  “He told us to drop him off,” Sarah recounts, “and that was the last time I saw him.”

Outside the church, a hitman was waiting in ambush.  Drawing a concealed handgun, the assassin pumped two bullets into Julio’s brain at point-blank range.

“I was waiting for him to arrive at the meeting,” Rosevelt remembers.  “At two o’clock in the afternoon I received a phone call.  The man said, ‘They just killed Julio.’  I said, ‘What?  How can they kill a pastor?’  I rushed over, thinking that perhaps he had just been hurt.  But when I arrived on the scene, he was motionless.  Julio, the noisy one, the active one, the man who just never sat still, was just lying there like a baby.”

“The first thing I saw was a pool of crimson blood,” Ruth recalls.  “And the verse that came to me was Psalm 116:15:  ‘Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.’  Sitting down next to Julio’s body, I knew I was on holy ground.

“I had to decide how I was going to deal with this circumstance.  One option was to respond in bitterness, not only toward the man that had done this terrible thing, but also toward God.  He had, after all, allowed the early removal of my husband, my daughters’ father and my church’s pastor.  Julio would never see his vision for the city fulfilled.  My other choice was to yield to the redemptive purposes of the Holy Spirit, to give Him a chance to bring something lasting and wonderful out of the situation.   Looking down at Julio I just said, ‘Lord, I don’t understand Your plan, but it is well with my soul.’”

Julio Ruibal was killed on the sixth day of a fast aimed at strengthening the unity of Cali’s fledgling church.  He knew that even though progress had been made in this area, it had not gone far enough.  He knew that unity is a fragile thing.  What he could not have guessed is that the fruit of his fast would be made manifest at his own funeral.

In shock, and struggling to understand God’s purposes in this tragedy, 1,500 people gathered at Julio’s funeral.  They included many pastors that had not spoken to each other in months.  When the memorial concluded these men drew aside and said, “Brothers, let us covenant to walk in unity from this day forward.  Let Julio’s blood be the glue that binds us together in the Holy Spirit.”

It worked!  Today this covenant of unity has been signed by some 200 pastors and serves as the backbone of the city’s high-profile prayer vigils.  With Julio’s example in their hearts, they have subordinated their own agendas to a larger, common vision for the city.

Emboldened by their spiritual momentum, Cali’s church leaders now hold all-night prayer rallies every 90 days.  Enthusiasm is so high that these glorious events have been moved to the largest venue in the city, the 55,000-seat Pascual Guerrero soccer stadium.  Happily (or unhappily as the case may be), the demand for seats continues to exceed supply.

In 1996 God led many churches to join in a collective spiritual mapping campaign.  To gain God’s perspective on their city, they began to gather intelligence on specific political, social and spiritual strongholds in each of Cali’s 22 administrative zones (a scene reminiscent of the 41 Hebrew clans that once rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem).  The results, stitched together like panels on a patchwork quilt, gave the church an unprecedented picture of the powers working in the city.  “With this knowledge,” Randy explained, “our unified intercession became focused.  As we prayed in specific terms, we began to see a dramatic loosening of the enemy’s stranglehold on our neighbourhoods.

“A few weeks later we used our spiritual mapping intelligence to direct large prayer caravans throughout Cali.  Most of the 250 cars established a prayer perimeter around the city, but a few paraded by government offices or the mansions of prominent cartel leaders.  My own church focused on the headquarters of the billionaire drug lord, José Santacruz Londono, who had escaped from Bogota’s La Picota prison in January.  His hacienda was located just four blocks from my home.  The next day we heard that he had been killed in a gunfight with national police in Medellin!”

In partnership with the Holy Spirit, Cali’s Christians had taken effective control of the city.  What made the partnership work are the same things that always attract the presence of the Lord: sanctified hearts, right relationships and fervent intercession.  “God began changing the city,” according to Ruth Ruibal, “because His people finally came together in prayer.”

As the kingdom of God descended upon Cali, a new openness to the gospel could be felt at all levels of society – including the educated and wealthy.  One man, Gustavo Jaramillo, a wealthy businessman and former mayor, told me,  “It is easy to speak to upper-class people about Jesus.  They are respectful and interested.”  Raul Grajales, another successful Cali businessman, adds that the gospel is now seen as practical rather than religious.  As a consequence, he says, “Many high-level people have come to the feet of Jesus.”

During my April 1998 visit to Cali, I had the privilege of meeting several prominent converts, including Mario Jinete, a prominent attorney, media personality and motivational speaker.  After searching for truth in Freemasonry and various New Age systems, he has finally come home to Christ.  Five minutes into our interview Jinete broke down.  His body shaking, this brilliant lawyer who had courageously faced down some of the most dangerous and corrupt figures in Latin America sobbed loudly.  “I’ve lost forty years of my life,” he cried into a handkerchief.  “My desire now is to subordinate my ego, to find my way through the Word of God.  I want to yield to Christ’s plan for me.  I want to serve Him.”

Explosive church growth is one of the visible consequences of the open heavens over Cali.  Ask pastors to define their strategy and they respond, “We don’t have time to plan.  We’re too busy pulling the nets into the boat.”  And the numbers are expanding.   In early 1998, I visited one fellowship, the Christian Centre of Love and Faith, where attendance has risen to nearly 35,000.   What is more, their stratospheric growth rate is being fuelled entirely by new converts.  Despite the facility’s cavernous size (it’s a former Costco warehouse), they are still forced to hold seven Sunday services.  As I watched the huge sanctuary fill up, I blurted the standard Western question: “What is your secret?”  Without hesitating, a church staff member pointed to a 24-hour  prayer room immediately behind the platform.  “That’s our secret,’ he replied.

Many of Cali’s other churches are also experiencing robust growth, and denominational affiliation and location have little to do with it.  The fishing is good for everybody and it’s good all over town.  My driver, Carlos Reynoso (not his real name), himself a former drug dealer, put it this way: “There is a hunger for God everywhere.  You can see it on the buses, on the streets and in the cafes.  Anywhere you go people are ready to talk.”  Even casual street evangelists are reporting multiple daily conversions – nearly all the result of arbitrary encounters.

Although danger still lurks in this city of 1.9 million, God is now viewed as a viable protector.  When Cali police deactivated a large, 174-kilo car bomb in the populous San Nicolis area in November 1996, many noted that the incident came just 24 hours after 55,000 Christians held their third vigilia.  Even El Pais headlined: “Thanks to God, It Didn’t Explode.”

Cali’s prayer warriors were gratified, but far from finished.  The following month church officials, disturbed by the growing debauchery associated with the city’s Feria, a year-end festival accompanied by 10 days of bull fighting and blowout partying, developed plans to hold public worship and evangelism rallies.

“When we approached the city about this,” Marcy recalls, “God gave us great favour.  The city secretary not only granted us rent-free use of the 22,000-seat velodrome (cycling arena), but he also threw in free advertising, security and sound support.  We were stunned!”  The only thing the authorities required was that the churches pray for the mayor, the city and the citizens.

Once underway, the street witnessing and rallies brought in a bounty of souls.  But an even bigger surprise came during the final service which, according to Marcy, emphasized the Holy Spirit “reigning over” and “raining down upon” the city of Cali.   As the crowd sang, it began to sprinkle outside, an exceedingly rare occurrence in the month of December.  “Within moments,” Marcy recalls, “the city was inundated by torrential tropical rain.  It didn’t let up for 24 hours; and for the first time in recent memory, Feria events had to be cancelled!”

On the evening of April 9, 1998, I had the distinct privilege of attending a citywide prayer vigil in Cali’s Pascual Guerrero stadium.  It was no small event, even in the eyes of the secular media.  For days leading up to the vigilia, local newspapers had been filled with stories linking it to the profound changes that had settled over the community.  Evening newscasters looked straight into the camera and urged viewers, whatever their faith, to attend the all-night event.

Arriving at the stadium 90 minutes early, I found it was already a full house.  I could feel my hair stand on end as I walked onto the infield to tape a report for CBN News.  In the stands, 50,000 exuberant worshipers stood ready to catch the Holy Spirit’s fire.  An additional 15,000 ‘latecomers’ were turned away at the coliseum gate.  Undaunted, they formed an impromptu praise march that circled the stadium for hours.

Worship teams from various churches were stationed at 15-metre intervals around the running track.  Dancers dressed in beautiful white and purple outfits interpreted the music with graceful motions accentuated by banners, tambourines and sleeve streamers.  Both they and their city had been delivered of a great burden.  In such circumstances one does not celebrate like a Presbyterian, a Baptist or a Pentecostal; one celebrates like a person who has been liberated!

Judging from the energy circulating in the stands, I was sure the celebrants had no intention of selling their emancipation short.  They were not here to cheer a championship soccer team or to absorb the wit and wisdom of a big-name Christian speaker.  Their sole objective on this particular evening was to offer up heartfelt worship and ask God to continue the marvellous work He had been undertaking in their city for 36 consecutive months.

“What you’re seeing tonight in this stadium is a miracle,” declared visiting Bogota pastor Colin Crawford.  “A few years ago it would have been impossible for Evangelicals to gather like this.”  Indeed, this city that has long carried a reputation as an exporter of death is now looked upon as a model of community transformation.  It has moved into the business of exporting hope.

High up in the stadium press booth somebody grabbed my arm.  Nodding in the direction of a casually dressed man at the broadcast counter he whispered, “That man is the most famous sports announcer in Columbia.  He does all the big soccer championships.”  Securing a quick introduction, I learned that Rafael Araújo Gámez is also a newborn Christian.  As he looked out over the fervent crowd, I asked if he had ever seen anything comparable in this stadium.  Like Mario, he began to weep.  “Never,” he said with a trembling chin.  “Not ever.”

At 2:30 in the morning my cameraman and I headed for the stadium tunnel to catch a ride to the airport.  It was a tentative departure.  At the front gate crowds still trying to get in looked at us like we were crazy.  I could almost read their minds.  Where are you going? Why are you leaving the presence of God?  They were tough questions to answer.

As we prepared to enter our vehicle a roar rose up from the stadium.  Listening closely, we could hear the people chanting, in English, “Lift Jesus up, lift Jesus up.” The words seemed to echo across the entire city.  I had to pinch myself. Wasn’t it just 36 months ago that people were calling this place a violent, corrupt hell-hole?  A city whose ministerial alliance consisted of a box of files that nobody wanted?

In late 1998, Cali’s mayor and city council approached the ministerial alliance, with an offer to manage a citywide campaign to strengthen the family.  The offer, which has subsequently been accepted, gives the Christians full operational freedom and no financial obligation.  The government has agreed to open the soccer stadium, sports arena and velodrome to any seminar or prayer event that will minister to broken families.

Another report

CALI, Colombia:  According to International Revival News (IRN), churches here are putting aside their differences, and this is resulting in great revival.  “Even death threats from Satanists can’t stop the church in Cali,” said missionary and pastor Randy MacMillan.

Cali, Columbia

Following the mysterious deaths of a number of pastors last year, MacMillan, pastor of the city’s 1,500-member Christian Faith Community Church survived several attempts on his life.   One man wanted to kill him during a Sunday service, but came up a few days later to confess that he had been paid by an international group of Satanists to shoot MacMillan.  “Something kept me from doing it,” he said.

The Columbian police consider the reports accurate but don’t think it worth investigating.  MacMillan says the city, previously known as a violent drug trafficking centre, is currently experiencing a Christian revival.  The churches have a common vision, and the effects of the Gospel are visible in government institutions, the drug world and the crime scene.  “All churches are affected, and we all know that we are in a spiritual battle,” says MacMillan.  “There are so many new believers that the church cannot keep pace.  Up to 50,000 people attend prayer rallies in the stadium.

It wasn’t always like that.  For many years, we pastors didn’t see eye to eye—sometimes we couldn’t even agree on where to meet.  In 1993, we decided to put these petty differences behind us and unite.  For example, we have elected 12 ‘spiritual elders’ to deal with city concerns.”

The Lord has been working in these communities in a marvellous way.  The transformation that has been reported is showing no signs of abating at all.  I just received a phone report indicating that the move of God in Cali has now begun to spread to other surrounding cities in the nation of Colombia, which, as you probably know, is presently being wrapped with civil unrest and violence at just a terrible level.

The entire soccer team associated with the City of Cali has now been born again.  This is the equivalent, for us, to the New York Yankees all giving their hearts to the Lord Jesus Christ or the Seattle Mariners all given faith in one fell swoop.  It has really rattled the community down there.

In addition to this, in a recent all-night prayer vigil, they have grown so large now that the football stadium there is now way too small for them.  In town there is this large open area (near the centre of the city) that is a park, kind of a mall.  This is the only place now where they are able to congregate.

There were over eighty thousand of these folks that gathered together for the last all-night prayer vigil.  As you may recall, they have been doing this every ninety days since early 1995.  So this had real staying power.  The mayor was at this particular gathering and once again, reaffirmed, I guess in a very, very emotional way, that the city of Cali, Colombia belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ.

They had just been given permission in the city of Cali to open the first  Christian television station in the nation of Colombia.  Cali used to be the most violent and corrupt city in that nation.  I like that turn-around.

I also learned that the city of Medellin, just a little farther north, was the initial headquarters of the cocaine cartel before they moved to Cali, and also served as a major centre for the production, processing and export of heroin.  Medellin is an extremely dangerous city – a very large city, too.

What has happened in Cali has now spread and has gotten all over Medellin, Colombia.  They just recently held a march through the city of over eighty thousand people proclaiming Jesus as Lord and worshipping.  The city council there now, believe it or not, has banned the observance of Halloween (it’s gone that far) because of its pagan origin.  This just gives you a little bit of an idea of what is continuing to happen.

We have also, now, personally developed a recent list of communities that have been transformed in the last few years.  That number that started with eight when we began our research, now is at more than forty; this is a growing trend.  We are seeing God not only continuing his work in the cities that we have featured, but there are now dozens of additional communities around the world that have recently been transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit.  That’s still only the beginning of what God is doing today.

Just as you and I are getting used to this idea that God can transform an entire city; not just grow a church in a community, but transform an entire city, God is now off to the races doing bigger and better things than that.  This is, of course, in God’s way.  You cannot keep up with him.  As soon as you think you’ve got Him figured, as soon as you think you have measured him, he’s moved beyond measure.

So, what we are seeing him do today is now moving into entire regions, provinces, national homelands.  In one case, I believe we are about ready to see an entire nation on the verge of being transformed.  This is what we have begun to film and will be the theme of the Transformations Two video that we hope to release in 2001.

____________________________________

a supernatural outpouring of the Holy Spirit

____________________________________

We saw the Holy Spirit fall with great joy similar to what some refer to as the ‘Toronto Blessing.’  This has swept many parts of China without any teaching from the West, but in many places has been a supernatural outpouring of the Spirit.

In Asia many Pentecostal denominations are trying to be more acceptable to the denominational church world through more emphasis on theological education and degrees than prayer, fasting and the power that comes from the baptism of the Holy Spirit.  The opposite is true in China, for the house churches are more than ever turning to the Pentecostal roots of our faith.

We also arranged for many other well known ministry teams to teach the leaders in several parts of China.  Among them were Lester Sumrall, Ulf Ekmann of Sweden, Reinhard Bonnke of Germany, Marilyn Hickey of the US and many others.  One overseas preacher was excited as he was able to preach to a crowd of 6,000 in Northeast China.  There has been such a revival there that nearly 360,000 were saved in a few years time.

We took on several new full time local Chinese in the China Ministry.  We have encouraged the rest of the Chinese congregation to get involved in ministry in China.  Of the 1,000 plus churches in Hong Kong, ours is possibly one of the few who openly advocate and participate in ministry in mainland China.  Most pastors are fearful to do so for possible repercussions against them in 1997.  We have made our position very clear, and though it has caused a very few to have reservations about our stand, most of the Chinese congregation know where we stand and are prepared for whatever might happen.

Thus towards the end of the year we organized three ministry trips to Yunnan, Sichuan and Guangdong provinces, and nearly 20 local Chinese participated in each trip.  They all came back burning with the fires of revival as they met with house church leaders who have been greatly used of God to perform miracles resulting in mass conversions.  They also realized clearly the intense persecution against Christians in China and thus are better able to prepare for possible persecution in a  year or so.  Their testimonies excited so many others that the next scheduled trips around Chinese New Year are all full of applicants.  Never before have local Chinese responded to the China ministry in such a positive manner.

Persecution of Christians is severe and widespread throughout China and the situation with human rights is worse than any time since China opened in 1978.  The hard‑liners are firmly in control and there don’t seem to be any moderate voices.  In addition to long prison sentences being given to proponents of democracy, daily scores of people are executed through China, many for what we would call ‘white collar crimes’ or corruption.  In elections for the Hong Kong Legislative Council in September, the pro‑democratic parties won by a landslide.  This was a great insult to China who considers these men as ‘counter‑revolutionary’ and ‘subversives’.  China has vowed to dismantle the whole elected government and will not allow any of these legally elected councilors (who are like congressmen in the USA) to remain in office after 1997.  They have also strongly attacked the local ‘Bill of Human Rights’ and say they are not obliged to honour human rights in any way, for they have not signed the Bill of Human Rights in the United Nations, though they are signatories to the UN Charter.

People are now extremely pessimistic about the future here and many are saying that the only ones who got it right are those who immigrated years ago.  It is quite difficult to do so now at this late date, and people don’t even know if the  present travel document (British Nationality Overseas passport) or the passport that will come in next year (Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the PRC) will be recognized by foreign governments.  It is not certain Hong Kong  people will then be able to travel overseas without difficulty.  In addition to the above, the economy has started to decline and unemployment is at an all‑time high.

I continually teach the people that whatever happens we should not even consider leaving Hong Kong, for our nation will need us.  But through the cell group system we are attempting to disciple everyone and prepare them for persecution, if it comes to that.  Also many more people are willing to come into the ministry now than in a booming economy.  We may possibly start a full time intensive Bible School in which people work together and study for preparation of ministry in China as well as Hong Kong.

In December Pastor David Kiteley of Shiloh Christian Fellowship in Oakland, visited Hong Kong and with David Wang of Asian Outreach ordained Kathy Balcombe also a ‘pastor’ in RCC.  She has been operating in the capacity for many years as I am away from Hong Kong much, but this will give her more authority to make decisions when I am away and deal with other matters.  The church is growing rapidly and many are finding the Lord almost weekly.  The goal for this new year is ‘Revival’ and we are believing for 50% growth this year.  We usually have close to 500 people actually attend on any given Sunday, but like any church there are many more who don’t always come except a few times a year.  On special meetings we might have over 600.  We are not only believing for more numbers, but for an increase in the gifts of the Holy Spirit and evangelism.  Several sister churches have been planted by our own Chinese or missionaries working with the church.

We now have nearly 130 full time missionaries under the visa sponsorship of RCC, and many more who now have their own visas (which are given after 7 years in Hong Kong).  We have set up special intensive training for all the missionaries, and hope that many more new missionaries will be granted visas to come here, which it may be impossible after the change of sovereignty.  None of them plan on leaving though the laws about overseas foreign church workers after 1997 is still very ambiguous.

Bibles

Lastly I would appreciate your prayers that we have sufficient funds to purchase Bibles.  For nearly 15 years we received Chinese Bibles free of cost or at a discount from other organizations.   However due to different philosophy in ministry, they will not provide us any Bibles at discount, so we have to pay to have them printed in Sri Lanka.  The price last year was about US $1.50 per Bible, but now we can get them at $1.35 per Bible due to offerings from Norwegian Christian.   It is still not safe, economical or logistically possible to print and distribute large amounts of whole Bibles in China, though many (including ourselves) have printed limited amounts of other types of materials including New Testaments.  The sale of Bibles through the official channels is severely restricted as everyone knows, so the only way most of the church leaders in the rural areas can receive Bibles is through ministries like ours.

Due to the lack of funds there were a  few occasions last year when our workers had no Bibles to take to China, and we were only able to provide teaching materials.  However we want to keep the ratio of Bibles to teaching materials of 80% to 20%, for we are primarily providing these to Spirit filled church leaders who are actively involved in church planting all over the nation.  We have direct contact and relationship with about 50 large evangelistic teams which are ministering to about 10 million believers.  These are all people who are baptized in the Spirit, speak in tongues and exercise gifts of the Holy Spirit.  They in turn reach out to the lost in which their ministry is confirmed by mighty gifts of the Spirit, as in the Book of Acts.  They also reach out to the small percentage of non‑Spirit filled believers, for almost every Christian in China greatly desires the power that only the Holy Spirit can give.

Therefore we desperately need a large supply of Bibles to supply these growing Spirit filled congregations.  We were also saddened to hear recently that a large shipment of 85,000 large study Bibles taken in by container through other organizations were confiscated by the PSB police a few weeks ago in Liaoning Province.  These study bibles are very expensive and not really that necessary as most of the rural church leaders are not trained to use such comprehensive materials.  They basically only need the whole Bible and a few good study books such as ‘The Shepherd’s Staff’.  Rather than teach them doctrine or give them study Bibles with all kinds of exposition and sermon outlines, I personally believe it is best to teach the leaders how to study the Bible and allow them to dig out the treasures themselves.  I have been amazed over the past 18 years of ministry in mainland China to see how Spirit filled leaders almost speak the same message and preach pure doctrine.  The Holy Spirit will ‘lead us into all truth’.

Concerning these large operations, we have found over the years that it is very difficult for such big projects  to succeed due to the restrictive situation in China.   It is best to take in the Bibles in smaller amounts by several dozen people daily and maintain a continual flow of distribution throughout the nation.  We have done this and met with little difficulties.  In fact last year only a few bags of literature were confiscated, and this was due to spot checks of the mainland Chinese Christians on the road or train.  To facilitate such a ministry, you need many workers both in Hong Kong and mainland China and a safe reliable tested method of distribution throughout the nation.  We believe we are this position as we have been doing this for the past 18 years and have probably distributed over four million books in this way.  However we thank the Lord for everything others are doing and don’t want to be critical when things go wrong, for we are in ‘warfare’.  Even so, the need is so great and resources are so limited, it is essential such ministry is effectual and economical.

We are expecting an increase of at least 100% in ‘Donkey’s for Jesus’ workers who carry Bibles into China, and desperately need the funds to purchase the Bibles.  Revival Christian Church has invested heavily in this ministry and last year purchased a floor for the China Ministry Offices at nearly US $300,000 and monthly rents a warehouse for US $1,300.  Therefore please pray with us that overseas Christians will help us to purchase the Bibles.  We still have not found anyone who will donate them, though several have talked about this possibility.  Yes, it is possible to print Bibles in China, but it is much more expensive now as it cannot be done in large quantities for safety reasons and they don’t have the equipment or paper to print on thin bible paper, making the transportation more expensive, dangerous and difficult.  Only Amity Press (associated with the Three‑Self‑Church) prints on thin paper, but their total output is severely limited by the government, as it is an official press.  It still it has not been possible for house church leaders to purchase large amounts of Bibles from them.

Please pray with us that 1996 will break all records for safe and responsible distribution of hundreds of thousands of Bibles and teaching materials in conjunction with many training sessions for the house church leaders.  Thank you for your prayers for the work here.  I hope this information has been helpful.  Below are some recent testimonies relating to the ministry we are involved in.

China testimonies

From 3-9 December, 1995, together with Rodney Kingstone and Ian Rowlands from England, we went to two cities in Henan Province to minister to the brothers and sisters there.  They both move in the prophetic and prophesied over 180 people.  They also taught on the gifts of prophecy and  the Church exercised the gift right after the teaching.  Below is their testimony from this trip:

Our expectation as we arrived in China was not that we had come with all the answers but that we have a lot to learn from our brothers and sisters.  We wanted to encourage and release them in the area of the prophetic ministry, with the anticipation that they would do the same for us in other areas.  So at all the places we ministered at, we asked them many questions and made sure that they prayed and laid hands on us!

At one of these times we were really encouraged by one of the prayers that one of the leaders prayed for us.  He prayed that wherever we traveled we would take and impact the place with some of the revival power from China and that we would be partners together in taking the gospel to the ends of the earth.

One of the things that amazed us, during our stay, was the incredible courage and bravery of the believers ‑ risking everything for the sake of the gospel.  Most of the leaders we met were on the run from the police and couldn’t live with their families ‑ some had not been back home for 20 years and had to find other ways of seeing their wives, children and relatives.

We ministered to many leaders on the subjects of prophetic ministry and intimacy with God.  There were many hours of note taking while sitting on benches no wider than 3‑ 4 inches!  We had the privilege of praying over everyone there and we prophesied over all but a handful as well.  We received excellent feedback on the accuracy and confirmatory nature of these prophecies.

There were a lot of memorable times, here are some snippets:

In one meeting after we had prophesied over some of the leaders, Rod had a word of knowledge about some people having severe pain and discomfort in the lower back area and God wanted to heal them.  After praying three sisters testified that they had been healed:

* one had suffered from back pain and not been very mobile but was now totally free.

* another had fallen down some steps while evangelising and the doctors had told her there was nothing they could do for her but God had just completely healed her.

* another had fallen out of a car and could not swing from side to side but was now able to and no longer had any pain.

At one of the 5.30 am prayer meetings one of the leaders prophesied about a river of God’s blessing followed by us both prophesying about God’s river and its effect, this was followed by us inviting God to come and meet us and us all praying.  After a little while one of the sisters started laughing and crying and then most of them ended up on the floor on the top of one another and then many of the brothers also started to laugh.  The prayer time finished with a great celebration of singing and dancing!

Our lasting impressions ‑ and the challenge to us ‑ was that we had portrayed to an environment that seemed close to the Book of Acts in its power, simplicity and naturalness.  It really was a where the people were truly supernaturally natural.

This was evident when we asked the question.  ‘Are you still seeing miracles?’

Their eyes lit up and their response was immediate.  ‘Yes, every day.’  They then told us story after story of what God had done.  Here are some examples:

Testimony 1 ‑ by Brother Yeung

In 1987, Pastor Dennis Balcombe came and led us into the baptism of the Holy Spirit.  Since then we started to see miracles happening as we go out to preach the Gospel.  Because of the miracles, many people came to know the Lord.  One time other co‑workers and I went to a meeting.  There was a 40 years old lady who was demon possessed who came into the meeting.  She was scolding and screaming at us while I was preaching.  She was disturbing the whole meeting so that I  could not continue to preach.  I then asked the whole congregation to kneel down and pray.  As we were praying, she came to the front and continued scolding and laughing at us.

I then stood up and said, ‘In the name of Jesus shut up!’

Not only she did not shut up, but she said the same thing to me, ‘In the name of Jesus you shut up!’

I then said, ‘In the name of Jesus kneel down!’ but she said the same thing back to me.

Whatever I said she would repeat the same thing.  I had never experienced that before.  I didn’t know what to do but cry out to God desperately.

I prayed to God, ‘I don’t want to be defeated by the power of the devil.’  I decided that no matter how long it may take or how hard it was, I was going to continue to pray until the demon was cast out.

At that time I knew that I could not pray in the understanding for she would repeat every word I said.  So I laid my hands on her and started to pray in tongues.  As I continued to pray I discovered that she wasn’t saying anything and she was softening down.  As she became weaker, I became stronger in the Spirit.  Then the lady tied her hands together and put her head down to the floor.  She cried out, ‘Please don’t pray anymore!’

I continued to pray in tongues.  After a while, she felt on the floor like a dead person.  Then after a few minutes, she woke up and was back to normal.  Because of this miracle, many people believed in the Lord in that village.

Testimony 2 ‑ by Brother Yeung

One time we had a evangelistic meeting in a village.  Many people came to the meeting to listen to the Gospel.  But as my co‑worker was preaching, some gangsters came in the meeting to cause trouble.  When I saw them coming in, I asked my co‑worker to sit down and I stood up to preach.

I thought to myself the reason that they were causing trouble was because they didn’t know the greatness of God.  So I spoke loudly that our God is a true and a great God and He is able to perform miracles.  Then I prayed to God to perform a miracle.  I then asked the congregation if anyone was deaf.  Then a sister brought a lady up who was deaf.  As soon as I prayed for her, she was immediately healed.  I then asked all who were deaf to come forward and that night they were all healed.

The gangsters were amazed as they saw the miracles happen.  Some people in the meeting including the gangsters went back to their home and brought back their family members who were sick.  There were eight paralyzed people who came and six of them were healed immediately.  Because of the miracles, the whole village including the gangsters all believed in Jesus.

I believe the reason for such a great revival in China first is by preaching the word of God and second is by the miracles of God.

Testimony 3 ‑ by Brother Yeung

One time we had a meeting which had 600 believers and 200 non‑believers.  Because the meeting was in a home Church, the house was so packed that many people had to climb up to the roof of on the trees in order to listen to the message.  That night I shared on the message of healing.  After I preached for about 3 hours I started to pray for the sick.

As I was praying, I saw an old lady who was praying desperately before God.  I asked her what  she wanted from God.  She told me that her daughter who was 19 years old was blind since birth and she was asking God to heal her.  Her daughter then stood up and I prayed for her in front of 800 people.

After I prayed, I asked her if she was able to see again.  Then I moved my fingers to test her sight.  Immediately, she was healed and the whole congregation sang Psalms 150 in praise to the Lord.  That night many blind people and paralyzed people were healed, and because of the miracles, the whole village came to the Lord.

Testimony 4 ‑ by Brother Yeung

One of my co‑workers went up to Saan Xi Province to preach the Gospel.  The people in that area are very superstitious and they worship many idols.  He went and preached to the people saying,  ‘Our God is a great God.  He is the one who created the universe.  He is able to cause the blind to see, the deaf to hear even the dead to raise again, but what can your God do for you?’

After he preached, a man ran to the hospital where a boy has just passed away.  He told the boys parents, ‘There is a Jesus from Henan came who said he can raise people from the dead.’

So the mother took her dead child to my co‑worker saying, ‘Jesus from Henan please raise my son from the dead.’

My co‑worker was shocked when he saw the dead child for he had never raised anyone from the dead before.  There was nothing he could do but just cry out to God.  At first he was very worried in his heart that if nothing happened, all the people would say he’s a liar and they would not believe in Jesus.  So he started to pray, but after a while, nothing happened so he prayed again and still nothing happened.  Then he prayed to God, ‘Lord, I don’t mind to loose face, but I really don’t want this to cause the people mock your name and not believe in you.  Please show forth your glory in this place.’

As he was praying that prayer, the mother of the child said, ‘Look, my child is alive again!’

He saw the child stand up and he ran throughout the house.  Due to this miracle, many people in that area burnt all their idols and believed in Jesus.

Testimony 5 ‑ by Brother Lui (who is a Public Service Bureau officer)

I have been a Christian for two years.  The reason I became a Christian is really a miracle.  Two years ago, I had a strange disease in which I had a bad headache all the time and my heart was beating very quick.  Not only that, I suddenly had a great fear in my heart that I was going to die.  I went to see many doctors and even stayed in the hospital, but there was nothing the doctors could do.

One time after I went to see the doctor, I meet a Christian lady who was preaching the Gospel.  Because I had nothing to do, I listened to what she had to say.  My Aunt is a Christian, so I knew a little about Jesus.  As she preached the Gospel to me, I decided to believe in Jesus.  But because I was wearing my police uniform, she didn’t believe that I would really become a Christian.

That night, I felt a great peace in my heart, and I prayed to Jesus, ‘Jesus, I know that you are here and I am willing to truly believe in you.’

The next morning when I woke up, the strange diseases all left me, I knew that Jesus had healed my disease.  Then I went back to the place where the sister preached the Gospel to me, tried to find her, but I did not succeed.  I did not give up but went everyday to wait for her.  She finally came on the fifth day and led me to her Church and baptized me.  I have ever since served God with all my heart.

Testimony of one distribution of The ‘Shepherd’s Staff’

This is the testimony of how God saved us from evil while we were distributing the ‘Shepherd’s Staff’ books of Bible readings.

On 31 July, 1995, the four of us took around 300 copies of the ‘Shepherd’s Staff’ from Guangzhou to bring back to Henan.  We took a train to go back..  The train that we went on was very crowed, we had no place to sit but just stood by the doorway.  After riding for four hours, the train stopped in a city and some police went up the train to have an inspection.  A policeman came to us and asked us why we carried so many bags.  We told him that we were porters, and we were hired by a man to carry the bags to Henan.  But he did not believe us and asked us to open up the bags.  We told him we had no keys for the locks but he still insisted we open the bags.

When he opened up the first bag, he checked and didn’t say a word.  Then he opened up other bags and found out that they were all books named the ‘Shepherd’s Staff’.  He asked us what were the books for, we told him that it’s to teach people how to shepherd.  He then checked the books and found out they were a Christian teaching book.  He was very mad at us and told us to follow him to the restaurant on the train.  At that time we knew that the situation was not good and that he was going to arrest us.

Because the train was very crowed, with all the bags that we had, we were not able to pass through all the people.  So the policeman had to go in front of us to open a way for us.  At that time the train started to move.  As we passed through the first car, the policeman was at the other car, and we knew that that was the only chance to escape.  I then told the other three brothers to leave the bags and run.  Two of them ran immediately and jumped off the train from the window.  Myself and the other brother also started to run, but because the train was going faster and faster, we could not jump at that time.  So we just ran through one car and the other until the train approached a small station and started to slow down.  We then jumped off the train from the window.

After we jumped off the train, we ran up the mountain until we reached the top.  When we reached the mountain top, we knelt down and prayed to God.  On one hand, we were thankful that God has protected us, but on the other hand, we were very worried about the other two brothers and were sad that we were not able to bring the ‘Shepherd’s Staff’ back to our brothers and sisters in Henan.  But thank God, as we returned to our home town, we met the other two brothers.  We rejoice in tears that God was with us and saved us.
