Modern Day Daniel

Egypt: For modern-day ‘Daniel,’ God closed the mouths of savage dogs meant to tear apart imprisoned Christian.

Like the lions in Daniel’s den, the ferocious attack dogs meant to torture Majed El Shafie in his Egyptian jail cell refused to do anything to him. They sat placidly, and one even licked his forehead – to the rage of the guards.

“These dogs are trained to listen to their masters,” El Shafie told Sid Roth. “But there is no higher Master than the Lord Jesus Christ.”

How did El Shafie, a remarkable law student, wind up on the wrong side of law? First, he converted to Christianity from Islam, a big no-no in Egypt, which defines itself as officially Muslim. Then he founded a pro-Christian legal aid organization with thousands of members. But the last straw was he wrote a book expounding his ideas.

On August 15, 1998, the government came after him. “At 1:30 in the morning, I heard a knock at my door.” El Shafie said. “Five officers came and broke the door. They took me to the police station behind the Parliament. They told me, ‘We know who you are. We know about your book. One thing we don’t know is who is rest of your group.”

Since El Shafie refused to name his associates, the police resorted to torture. They escorted him to Abu Zaabel prison in Cairo, known in the Middle East as “Hell on Earth,” where he endured seven days before nearly dying, El Shafie said. He recovered slowly in a hospital.

El Shafie was born into an influential family in Cairo of lawyers and Supreme Court justices. But he learned of the injustices of Egyptian law in his first year at law school, when there were up to 7,000 prisoners languishing in Egyptians jails whose only crime was being a Christian.

[He questioned a Christian friend.] “From my knowledge, if there is persecution, it means the enemy is trying to hide something.”

His friend very discreetly dodged the question and instead offered him a different book, one “that answers every question he could have.” In the pages of the Bible he discovered a justice, love and forgiveness he had never known before.

Providentially, he first opened the Scripture to John 8, the story of the woman caught in adultery. “Judge her according to the law of Moses!” the Pharisees cried out to Jesus.

“Whoever of you is without sin, cast the first stone,” Jesus replied.

“The only one who could cast the first stone was the Lord Jesus because He was the only one who had no sin,” he observed. “But He didn’t. He told the lady, ‘Go and sin no more. I forgive you.’ This was my first time to see true forgiveness.”

2Testifying before Congress about Syria.

Shafie embarked on a year-long study comparing the Bible with the Koran. When he finished he approached his Christian friend and said: “Now I know what Christianity is about. It’s not a religion. It’s not about going to church on Sunday. Christianity is a relationship with God. I accept the Lord and I want to receive Jesus.”

But converting to Christ is no small matter in Egypt. He would be excluded from professional positions, lose his standing in the community, endanger his life and face severe rejection from his family.

“None of that equal anything if you know that your soul in the end will end up in Hell,” Shafie said.

Using his knowledge in law, Shafie launched a non-profit organization to advocate for religious freedom and aid Christians in jail. It grew in two years to 24,000 members. He wrote a book expounding his beliefs and was arrested on Aug. 15, 1998.

By El Shafie’s account, the Egyptian torture machine works through various steps. First they change the prisoner’s name so family members can’t locate them and so international human rights organizations can’t verify the family’s accusation.

3The Abu Zaabal prison

“The officers who are torturing you are always wearing masks. You cannot see their faces. They always call each other by numbers, not by names.”

As they try to break a prisoner down, they increase the torture. From one day to the next, they inform the prisoner of the next day’s tortures, thus inflicting mental anxiety all night long before carrying it out, El Shafie said.

On Day #1, his hair was shaved and his head was put alternately in freezing cold and boiling hot water for a minute each. “After that, they took me to my cell, and the told me, ‘You tell us the name of your friends.’”

He responded: “I haven’t taken a shower for a long time, so I enjoyed the cold and hot water. The more that you smile, the more you show no fear, the more you show that they have no control.”

On Day #2, they hung El Shafie upside down, burned his body with cigarettes and slashed him with knives.

“The only thing I can remember from Day #2 is the taste and the smell of my blood,” he said. “They took me back to my cell.”

4

Day #3 was the three snarling dogs loosed into his dark cell. But “the three dogs were sitting around me. None of them attacked.”

Since the first set of dogs didn’t bite his flesh, the guards brought in another set of dogs, which also sat placidly.

“The guards were talking about it as a miracle,” El Shafie said.

On Day #4, guard 27, a huge officer, offered him anything he could want – a big house, money, women – if he would just inform on his associates. El Shafie “agreed” but said he first needed some shish kabobs because he hadn’t eaten in three days.

After licking his fingers, El Shafie told the hulking guard: “I can’t remember the names, but I’ll tell you the name of our leader, and if you can catch him, he can tell you exactly the names of all the members.

“The name of our leader is Jesus Christ,” he said. “If you can catch Him, catch Him.”

The guard slapped him, sending him against the wall. El Shafie was led to a dark room and tied hands, arms, feet, legs and neck to a wooden cross. He hung there for 2-and-a-half days. Then they cut his left shoulder and poured lemon and salt on the wound.

“He thought he broke my spirit, but he was wrong,” El Shafie said.

Nearly dead from extreme dehydration, El Shafie was taken to a hospital. Miraculously, Jesus gave him water, he said. After a week, he recovered.

Eventually he was tried and sentenced to death. But with the help of friends, he managed an audacious escape. He stole a jet ski on the Sinai Peninsula and rode it out of Egypt to Israel.

Through the help of international organizations, he was granted political asylum in Canada in 2002. He became a Canadian citizen in 2006.

El Shafie’s recent efforts to liberate the oppressed under Islam included traveling to ISIS-held territory to buy Yazidi sex slaves their freedom. For his humanitarian work, he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.

“Persecuted Christians are dying every day, but they are still smiling. They are in a very deep dark night, but they still have the candles of the living God,” El Shafie said. “Our enemies have a very strong army, have very strong weapons, but we have the Lord Almighty. They can kill the dreamer, but no one can kill the dream.”

Influential Buddhist Monk Receives Jesus

INFLUENTIAL BUDDHIST MONK RECEIVES JESUS

 BY Mark Ellis

1Buddhist Monks                                                                                                                                        The The Nepal earthquake in 2015 killed over 8,000 people and was the worst natural disaster to strike that country since 1934. Hundreds of thousands were left homeless — with entire villages flattened — which prompted many Christian organization to respond with humanitarian aid.

A prominent Buddhist monk observed carefully as Christians helped rebuild his community last year after the massive temblor reduced his neighborhood to rubble.

“As a powerful Tibetan monk with 1,000 disciples, his word was law,” a ministry director for Christian Aid Mission reported. “He was watching us for seven days continually as Christians became salt and light to the community.”

Nepal2

Between the witness of the Christian workers and a powerful move of the Holy Spirit on the man’s heart something remarkable happened.

“After watching us for seven days, he said, ‘I’m going to give my life to Jesus.’”

Before the earthquake, the Buddhist leader had never allowed homegrown missionaries to preach in his area.

But he was disheartened when he observed that none of his monastery colleagues assisted with aid or rebuilding following the earthquake.

“Where are the 330 million gods of Hinduism? Where are the Buddhists?” the monk asked.

The monk placed his faith and trust in Jesus Christ, along with his family and many others, and became theleader of a church, according to Christian Aid Mission.

The former Buddhist monk’s two sons were recently baptized, and his daughter has become a Bible teacher for children in the area.

His former Buddhist colleagues now oppose him, and have made a false accusation that he was paid to convert. Undaunted, the former monk says he wants to go to remote areas on Nepal’s border with Tibet to proclaim Christ,” according to Christian Aid Mission.

“I want to go where no churches are,’” the former monk told Christian Aid Mission. “We have come across many other people thankful for our help. Even in hostile areas, many people were touched. When they saw our love and service, people were amazed – they saw the life of Christ.”

Healed at the train station

KNEES AND BACK HEALED AT THE TRAIN STATION

Simon Mclean train sation
Kingdom selfies!

This is Mary and John. While waiting at a busy train station after dismissing a group of school kids I had taken on an excursion, I saw a few people with a stall set up handing out flyers. I immediately felt ‘lower right back pain’ for an Asian lady there and asked her if she had any pain. She didn’t but she took me over to an older man, John, who was with her. John had some minor lower back pain and a blocked left ear. He experienced only a small measure of healing in his back after a few times praying and to be honest, I was a bit discouraged and was about walk back to my car after that.

Mary then came over again and I asked Her if she had any pain at all, which she did in her upper back/neck region. I began to pray for her and began to see a picture of her as a little girl playing in a yard with her younger sister. I began to ask questions to see if this meant anything to her and it was spot on. As I continued praying over her, she tangibly could feel the presence of God and when we finished, her back was completely healed!

After a short time of sharing about my experiences with Jesus, she told me her knees were in a lot of pain also. After praying three times, all the pain left and she was able to bend down fully. She had pain in both of these areas for over 2 years!

Just before I was about to go, she told me that when she took a breath, there was a lot of pressure around her chest and mid back area. After praying twice this all left as well!

This is what’s available for anyone who is willing to take a risk, even if you get wrong the first time. What was awesome about this experience is that over a hundred people were walking by watching as well, many of them school aged kids.

Healing Prayer in Myer Store

TWO STORE ATTENDANTS HEALED AND FELT THE TANGIBLE PRESENCE OF JESUS IN THE STORE

By Simon Mclean

Last night I went to Myer in the city to pick up shoes for Jordan’s wedding. I met the two ladies pictured. They helped me with getting the right sizes.

Once I was all sorted with the shoes I asked Alyssa if she had pain in her arm. She said she didn’t but she had pain all through her back be cause she was pregnant. And asked me why.

I said “can I show you something cool? Take my hand!”
She cautiously took my hand while Olga looked on.
“In Jesus name pain go right now! Muscles relax,” I said.
Then I asked her to bend and try it out. She bent down and came back up wide eyed. I asked her what was happening..
She said “It’s gone! I couldn’t do that with out pain before!”
I said “Don’t be nice to me! Be honest. Is there even a little bit of pain?” She said “No! I’m being honest! It’s all gone! What happened!?”

Then Olga said “My turn! Do it to me!”
I asked her what is causing her pain and she told me that she hurt her hamstring about a year ago. So I took her hand and said the same thing. And asked her to try it out. She said there was no change, so I prayed again. Still no change. “Alyssa! You pray!” I said. So Alyssa put her hand on her shoulder and said the same quick prayer that I did. I asked Olga to try it out again. “It’s gone down! ” she said!

They both asked what was happening. So I told them a bit of my story before and after Jesus and how what was happening to them is because the love of Jesus for them. I then said “Jesus healing you guys is his way of inviting you into a personal relationship with himself where this which just happened becomes normal! Where you talk to Jesus and he actually talks back because he is in love with you!”

Then Olga said “Jesus talks to you?”
“Yes,” I said. She then said “what’s he saying about me?” I smiled and said “I’ll ask!” Instantly I saw a snow covered train line with a little house next to it. So I said “When you were little in Russia (she told me she was Russian earlier in the conversation.) did you live right next to a train line?” She said yes. Alyssa eyes go even wider and said “Oh my God!”

Olga said “tell me something else.”
I then said “Did you recently lose a white dog?” She said she did and asked again for something else. I felt God say to me that she’s got something she wants to share. So I said “Olga, I feel like you have something you want to tell me?” She then said “I wanted you to tell me about my brother.” She then told me that her brother died two years ago and she was struggling with it. I then got to tell her about how God did not take her brother. And that he’s a loving Father and he was with her through even those hardest times.

Then Alyssa said “tell me about me! ” I smiled and said “I see dark water… What happened when you were little?” She said “OH MY GOD! I nearly drowned when I was 6 years old! I am terrified of water even today!”

I then got to share with them about how Jesus knows everything about them and how much he loves them! They both said “So how do we give our lives to Jesus?” I told them what to pray when they got off work because they said they couldn’t do it right there because it was super busy.

They both asked me for my contact details and what church I go to so they could find out more about Jesus!

Opportunities to administrate the kingdom of Heaven are everywhere if you just stop a second. (This happened because I got a wrong word of knowledge.)
[Simon’s impression was that Alyssa had pain in her arm.]

Christian revival, renewal, outpouring, or times of refreshing, no matter what you call it, is something that has been happening ever since the first outpouring of the Spirit on the day of Pentecost.
I honestly don’t care what you call it. Quibbling over semantics is silly. The fact of the matter is that there have been ebbs and flows of spiritual fervor throughout the history of Christianity.

Until the time where there is no longer a war between the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of God; until such a time as the war between the flesh and the Spirit has been resolved, there will always be a need for Christian revival in each generation.

As the psalmist sung,

Psalm 85:6

Will You not revive us again, that Your people may rejoice in You?

23 Christian Quotes And Sayings About Revival

0 2A-Cry-for-Revival

When Holy God draws near in true revival, people come under terrible conviction of sin. The outstanding feature of spiritual awakening has been the profound consciousness of the Presence and holiness of God. – Henry Blackaby

Revivals begin with God’s own people; the Holy Spirit touches their heart anew, and gives them new fervor and compassion, and zeal, new light and life, and when He has thus come to you, He next goes forth to the valley of dry bones… Oh, what responsibility this lays on the Church of God! If you grieve Him away from yourselves, or hinder His visit, then the poor perishing world suffers sorely! – Andrew Bonar

How we have prayed for a Revival – we did not care whether it was old-fashioned or not – what we asked for was that it should be such that would cleanse and revive His children and set them on fire to win others. – Mary Booth

To look back upon the progress of the divine kingdom upon earth is to review revival periods which have come like refreshing showers upon dry and thirsty ground, making the desert to blossom as the rose, and bringing new eras of spiritual life and activity just when the Church had fallen under the influence of the apathy of the times. – E.M. Bounds

There is a growing conviction everywhere, and especially among thoughtful people, that unless revival comes, other forces will take the field, that will sink us still deeper into the mire of humanism and materialism. – Duncan Campbell

Revival is not just a feeling of excitement of the Lord. We get excited about many things, but excitement is not a revival if God is not the thing that gets us excited. – Jerry Falwell

A revival is nothing else than a new beginning of obedience to God. – Charles Finney

There can be no revival when Mr. Amen and Mr. Wet-Eyes are not found in the audience. – Charles Finney

It was wonderful to see the change soon made in the manners of our inhabitants…From being thoughtless or indifferent about religion, it seemed as if all the world were growing religious, so that one could not walk through the town in an evening without hearing psalms sung in different families of every street. – Benjamin Franklin [Philadelphia, 1730’s, on the effects of George Whitefield’s preaching]

Revival is falling in love with Jesus all over again. – Vince Havner

We cannot organize revival, but we can set our sails to catch the wind from Heaven when God chooses to blow upon His people once again. – G. Campbell Morgan

A true revival means nothing less than a revolution, casting out the spirit of worldliness and selfishness, and making God and His love triumph in the heart and life. – Andrew Murray

Revival is the visitation of God which brings to life Christians who have been sleeping and restores a deep sense of God’s near presence and holiness. Thence springs a vivid sense of sin and a profound exercise of heart in repentance, praise, and love, with an evangelistic outflow. – J.I. Packer

It’s true that (many) are praying for a worldwide revival. But it would be more timely, and more scriptural, for prayer to be made to the Lord of the harvest, that He would raise up and thrust forth laborers who would fearlessly and faithfully preach those truths which are calculated to bring about a revival. – A.W. Pink

You never have to advertise a fire. Everyone comes running when there’s a fire. Likewise, if your church is on fire, you will not have to advertise it. The community will already know it. – Leonard Ravenhill

As long as we are content to live without revival, we will. – Leonard Ravenhill

Present-day wickedness, apostasy and modern civilization cannot prevent revival. – John R. Rice

Revival begins in the individual’s heart. Let it begin with you on your face alone before God. Turn from every sin that might hinder. Renew yourself to a new devotion to the Savior. – Lee Roberson

Study the history of revival. God has always sent revival in the darkest days. Oh, for a mighty, sweeping revival today! – Adrian Rogers

Therefore, in a post-Christian world and in an often post-Christian church it is imperative to point out with love where apostasy lies. We must openly discuss with all who will listen, treating all men as fellow men, but we must call apostasy, apostasy. If we do not do that, we are not ready for reformation, revival, and a revolutionary church in the power of the Holy Spirit. We are all too easily infiltrated with relativism and synthesis in our own day. We tend to lack antithesis. – Francis Schaeffer

Oh! men and brethren, what would this heart feel if I could but believe that there were some among you who would go home and pray for a revival men whose faith is large enough, and their love fiery enough to lead them from this moment to exercise unceasing intercessions that God would appear among us and do wondrous things here, as in the times of former generations. – Charles Spurgeon

Trying to run a church without revivals can be done when you can run a gasoline engine on buttermilk. – Billy Sunday

Have you noticed how much praying for revival has been going on of late – and how little revival has resulted? I believe the problem is that we have been trying to substitute praying for obeying, and it simply will not work. – A.W. Tozer

And another:

Revival is God pouring out his Spirit.

We can pray for it, ask for it, believe for it, repent for it, and move in it, but God does it.

Does Jesus live here?

Does Jesus live here?

150,000 believers in 15 years in one state in India.

Years ago Randeep was a nominal Christian. He identified himself as such simply because his parents were Christian, and he was not a Muslim or Hindu. However, his mother became an ardent follower of Jesus and felt led to go to an area in Northern India near the border with Tibet. Her family felt she was crazy and refused to go with her, so she went alone.

Two years later Randeep and his Hindu wife decided to visit her. While Randeep was walking along a street, he saw a Hindu priest trying to cast evil spirits out of a totally demonized woman who was writhing on the sidewalk. As he walked past, he heard a voice command him to pray for the woman and set her free. He kept walking, arguing with the voice that he did not know what to say. Again the voice came commanding him to help the woman and said, “Do you not think I can manifest myself through anyone on this street, should I choose to do so?”

He walked back, and as he did so heard the priest telling the woman to bring certain offerings to the temple. Righteous anger rose up in him and he rebuked the priest for laying more burdens upon the woman and then laid his hands upon her to pray. To his amazement, for the first time in his life, he began to pray in tongues and the woman was set free.

The next morning he woke up to the noise of a crowd milling around outside the house. He became afraid that something had gone wrong with the woman and they were there to beat him up. So his mother went out to see what was going on.

They asked her, “Does Jesus live here?”

“Yes He does,” was her reply.

So they invited the crowd into the house and prayed for them all. That was the beginning of seven years of great grace and miracles.

Soon his mother was saying to Randeep that he needed to begin to teach the new followers, but his question was what to teach them? Knowing it was Jesus who had spoken to him, he began to read the gospels to find out who Jesus was and what He did. Reading that Jesus had twelve disciples, he did the same and began to follow Jesus with them. Realizing that their state had twelve districts, after three years with his disciples, he sent them to start all over again in each of those twelve states. That was fifteen years ago and now this movement has baptized over 150,000, plus those baptized by other teams they have trained.

“Now this movement has baptized over 150,000.”

Indian travelOnce he had sent out his twelve disciples, Randeep needed to start over again. Seeking to obey Jesus in Luke 10, he moved to a new city and began to walk the streets. After three months of praying, walking, blessing the city and seeking a man of peace, a man came to him and said: “I have seen you walking by day after day. Why?”

Randeep explained what he was doing and the man asked him to come into his home to pray for his sick wife. Jesus healed the woman and that home became the house of peace for the beginning of a new multiplication of the generations of Jesus Christ.

To understand the dynamic of this movement, many people have been interviewed, and one phrase was repeated over and over. “The Holy Spirit spoke, the Holy Spirit moved me, the Holy Spirit led me…” These believers had been connected to Jesus by the Holy Spirit. They had not been connected to a human leader, to a book, to a doctrine, to a system – they had been plunged deep into relationship with Jesus.

It is sad that one of the challenges this movement has to face is from western missionaries who have come to them and charge them with not planting ‘real’ churches, since they have no buildings, no bible schools and no paid professional clergy. How do these followers of Jesus respond to that charge? “We are simply following the example and words of Jesus. We are healing the sick, casting out the demons, raising the dead, baptizing those who believe, making disciples who do the same, and forming communities of disciples who meet where ever life happens. Where is your fruit?”

How to Give a Great Speech

How To Give A Great Speech

You can apply this to giving messages and preaching.

1

Anybody can learn to give a great speech. The best speakers include a clear, relevant message and a few great stories to illustrate it. Forget fancy PowerPoint presentations and loads of data. Instead, keep your speech simple, with a clear beginning, middle and end. Focus on one theme, and eliminate everything else. “People struggle so mightily writing speeches when all they have to do is find a message and three great stories to prove it,” says Jane Praeger, a Columbia University professor and the president of the speech presentation and coaching firm Ovid Inc.

“Speeches are an inefficient form of communication,” adds Nick Morgan, the president of Public Words, Inc., and author of Trust Me: Four Steps to Authenticity and Charisma. “People don’t remember much of what they hear, so focus and keep it simple.” Here are tips from the experts.

2

Practice beforehand

“You would do better practicing in the shower, and running through the speech in your head, than practicing in front of a mirror, which is distracting,” says Jane Praeger. “You do have to practice out loud, hopefully with a small audience.” Practice replacing deadening filler words like “um,” “so,” and “like” with silence. If you can rehearse in the space where you’ll be speaking, that’s a real plus. Go to the back of the room, imagine that you’re deaf or distracted, and you’ll know how to reach those people.

3

Work the room

Try to speak to audience members before your speech, so that you can focus on a few friendly faces, particularly if you get nervous. “If you’re making eye contact with a friendly person in quadrant one, everyone to their left will think that you’re talking to them,” says Praeger. “Then do the same thing in quadrant two. You want to see your talk as a series of conversations with different people throughout the room.”

4

Prepare with relaxation techniques

If you’re nervous before approaching the stage, take a few deep breaths. Picture yourself delivering a successful speech. “Most people will be nervous for the first few minutes,” says Praeger. “You want to channel that adrenaline into positive energy.”

5

Don’t read your speech

Tell your speech from heart, or use a note card with bullet points as a cheat sheet. Bring the card with you and place it on the lectern. If you freeze up mid-speech, you can take a deep breath, look at your card, and know exactly what story you’re going to tell next.

5

Stand up straight

Whether you walk across the stage or stand behind a lectern, try to maintain good posture. “Imagine that your head is being held up by a string,” says Praeger.

1

Lead with an anecdote

Ditch the thank yous and jump right in. [Unless “Thanks Name” is appropriate] People often make the mistake of starting speeches by thanking the introducer, or expressing their happiness at being there. “Instead, jump right in with a framing story that suggests what the topic is without giving it all away, a statistic, a question or some kind of interaction with the audience,” says Nick Morgan. If you know what your speech is about–and it should be about one thing–you should have an easy time deciding on an opening. Get right into the story and let the audience know what the speech will be about.

1

Keep it simple

Forget fancy PowerPoint presentations and loads of data. Focus on one theme and eliminate everything else. “Speeches are an inefficient form of communication,” says Morgan. “People don’t remember much of what they hear, so focus and keep it simple.” The best speeches include one clear, relevant message and a few great stories to illustrate that message.

1

Keep it short

“I think a speech should not be more than ten minutes long,” says Praeger. “Five to seven minutes is ideal.” If you’re aiming for seven minutes, your prepared speech should run shorter than that so that you can factor in extra time for pauses and audience responses.

1

Use body language that makes you appear comfortable

If you show signs of nervousness, like crossing your arms, or clutching your hands in front of your stomach, your audience will sense your nerves and be less open to your message. “You have to pretend that you’re having a good time and are open to the audience so that they can have a good time and be open back to you,” says Morgan. “Successful public speaking is all about passion and emotion. If you’re excited, then we will be, too.”

1

Slow down

Articulate your words, regardless of your natural speaking style. “Authenticity is key,” says Praeger. “You can’t be someone you’re not. On the other hand, you can be your best self. Softness doesn’t detract from a speech if you’re committed to what you’re saying. Passion, commitment and conviction are critical for delivery, and you can do that whether you’re soft-spoken or not. Any number of delivery styles will work.”

One man planted 300 churches in Cuba

Prolific Cuban church planter: 300 churches planted and 1,000 leaders trained

Otoniel Martinez grew up in a Christian family. His father was a pastor in a time when government pressure made it difficult to follow Jesus. Otoniel was a gifted student and could have attended one of the top schools in Cuba.

But in order to attend a top university he had to deny his christian faith, which we would not do. He decided he would bypass upper-level education to follow Christ no matter what, according to a report by United World Mission (UWM).

His resolve was tested many times as he faced opposition from the authorities. He successfully planted one church, which proceeded to reproduce 26 other churches.

From there, the Holy Spirit planted a God-sized vision in Otoniel’s heart: to see churches planted in every corner of Cuba and to send workers into the rest of the world. For assistance, Otoniel
reached out to UWM, because they led his family to Christ many years ago.

A church planting trainer from UWM was introduced to Otoniel. Together, they developed a
training for Cuba known as the “Sembradores” (Sowers) Network.

They assembled 50 people from 20 denominations in Bayamo, the heart of communism in Cuba. After just one training session they were kicked out of the church they were using because the pastor feared that he would receive retribution from the local authorities.

“We began to meet outside in a remote area of a campground,” noted Joseph Milioni in the
Evangelical Missions Quarterly (EMQ). “We didn’t use any chairs so that we could scatter if local officials came near.” Rocks scattered around the camp became their chairs.

“Even with all the setbacks, it was never a question of stopping the training. Otoniel showed dependence on God when things went well and when obstacles developed. This went on to be
one of our best trainings. Many of our current network leaders came out of this training.”

As churches were planted a new need arose. In a country where the average person makes
$15 a month, how could churches support church planters and achieve Otoniel’s long-term vision?

“By partnering with several different North American partners we began to help develop micro-enterprises on the island. We have seen everything from bicycle taxis to ice cream stands.
All the funds go towards church planting and the churches that support it,” according to UWM.

Milioni marvels at the fruit. “Together, we developed a church-planting network that has seen
close to one thousand church planters trained in less than five years. One of the greatest lessons he (Otoniel) taught me is dependency—not the dangers of developing dependency on outside resources, but rather of being truly dependent on God.”

Otoniel’s reliance on God sets him apart. “Despite having more talent, passion, and vision than
many could hope to have, he met every step with a heart pleading to God for guidance,” Milioni notes. “Every step of the way, despite success, Otoniel has never relied on his own abilities.”

“He is recognized by many national leaders and has tremendous respect both in and out of Cuba,
but inevitably during each visit, I still see him gathering his family together, looking to God to meet needs and give guidance.”

Inevitably, a God-sized vision is met with adversity. “When everything seemed to be going well, Otoniel’s father passed away and his wife, Idalmi, was diagnosed with cancer.
However, because Otoniel has established a habit of leaning on God, he is seeking God to comfort him and be with him as he has always been,” Milioni notes.

Otoniel’s vision has grown to develop Cuban missionaries to go to the unreached.
From the beginning, the responsibility of the church to be involved in missions was taught. A missions professor from Costa Rica was brought in to teach the Cuban pastors how local churches could be involved in missions. After a few days the hearts of the pastors were burdened to send church planters around the world, according to UWM.

Despite the fact that these churches had very little income, the pastors raised $60 for missions
on their first night (4 months wages). A committee was formed to create a Cuban missions organization and training center for missions.

The Sembradores network has resulted in more then 300 new churches being planted.
Many second-generation churches have been counted. More then 20 micro-enterprises have been established.

“We have seen God do amazing things and believe there is still more to come.”

Philippines Village Embraces Christ

PHILIPPINES VILLAGE EMBRACES CHRIST AFTER VIEWING PASSION OF THE CHRIST

According to reports, a local Philippines ministry spent eight months building a relationship with the Manobo tribal peoples in northern Mindanao. During that time, mission leaders held Bible studies, teaching chronologically through the narratives of the Hebrew Scriptures to the New Testament. Men, women and children began attending these sessions and expressed a tremendous thirst for the Gospel. “The week before presenting the Gospel lesson was a week of suspense,” said the director, whose name is withheld for security reasons. “Everyone was in anticipation as to what would happen to Jesus after He was arrested by the Jewish leaders. To make the teaching of the Gospel that night more vivid, the teacher inserted a brief video clip of the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus from the movie, ‘The Passion of Christ.'”

After viewing “The Passion,” which depicts the final 12 hours in the life of Jesus, on the day of His crucifixion in Jerusalem, many of the villagers expressed anger at the mistreatment of Jesus by Jewish authorities and Roman soldiers. “One of the old men emotionally said, ‘How I wish I could be by Jesus’ side and help Him!'” But after the truth had been explained concerning the death and resurrection of Christ as God’s only provision for man’s salvation, a feeling of awe and amazement was felt. Moved by the sacrifice of Jesus, many of the villagers professed faith in His death and resurrection, and embraced Christianity. “Finally, after teaching over the past eight months from Genesis onward, we were able to present the Gospel, and nearly the whole village responded and trusted Jesus as their Lord and Saviour,” he said.

“It was a great joy for us to see them understand the saving grace of Jesus for salvation; some cried as they shared their testimony of faith.”  The next day, even more villagers shared how the Gospel had changed their lives. One elderly man who said he had put his trust in Jesus as the promised Messiah concluded, “He suffered so much for me. I’m glad He rose again from the dead.” One particularly heart-warming story came from an 84-year-old woman who said that she was grateful to hear what Jesus had done on the cross for her. She said that while she had little time remaining in this world, she knew that Heaven was her sure home because of what Christ did for her. “Many more Manobo, both children and adult, expressed faith in Jesus,” the ministry director said “Truly, God is at work in the lives of these people”

The Manobo are several people groups who inhabit the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. They speak one of the languages belonging to the Manobo language family. Their origins can be traced back to the early Malay peoples who came from the surrounding islands of Southeast Asia. Today, their common cultural language and Malay heritage help to keep them connected.

The most common lifestyle of the Manobo is that of rural agriculture. Unfortunately, their farming methods are very primitive. They grow maize and rice as their principal crops. Some of the farmers have incorporated plowing techniques, while others have continued to use the “slash-and-burn” method. Some use a farming system called kaingin. This is a procedure in which fields are allowed to remain fallow for certain periods of time so that areas of cultivation may be shifted from place to place. This is very inefficient since many plots of land are not being used at one time.

Social life for the Manobo is patriarchal (male-dominated). The head of the family is the husband. Polygamy (having more than one wife at a time) is common and is allowed according to a man’s wealth. However, among the Bukidnon, most marriages are monogamous. The only exception is that of the powerful datus (headmen).

The political structures of the Manobo groups are all quite similar. A ruler, called a sultan, is the head of the group. Beneath him are the royal and non-royal classes. Only those people belonging to the royal classes can aspire to the throne. Those belonging to the non-royal classes are under the power and authority of the royal classes. Each class is interdependent on the others.

The political aspects of life are often integrated with the social aspects. For example, many social events, such as weddings, require political leaders. Whenever there is a negotiation for marriage, both the bride and the groom must use the local datu (headman) to make all of the arrangements. So when their leaders embrace Jesus the tribe does also.

They are being told that there is a loving God who longs to make them a part of His family, that the “great creator spirit” is really a Father who cares for them. Prayer has the power to break through the strongholds of spirit worship. Intercessors are needed to daily stand in the gap and pray for the salvation of these precious people.

"Follow me"

Jesus went among the villages

teaching.

Jesus left the shores of the Sea of Galilee and Capernaum
to return to Nazareth to teach the people there.

And when Jesus had finished these parables,
he went away from there, and coming to his hometown
he taught them in their synagogue,
so that they were astonished, and said,
“Where did this man get this wisdom
and these mighty works?
  (Matthew 13:53-54 ESV)

When he left Nazareth He “went about among the villages teaching” (Mark 6:6).

When I see the scene depicted at Nazareth Village of the stone house, the olive trees,
and the dusty path, I recall the visits Jesus and His disciples made throughout Galilee.

Lois Tverberg, in her excellent book Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus, has written a helpful
work about Jesus and His teaching drawing on the Jewish concept of the rabbi and his disciples.

The way Jesus taught his first disciples was not unique
but part of a wider tradition in Judaism that began
a few centuries before his time.
Jesus didn’t hand his disciples a textbook
or give them a course syllabus.
He asked each one of them to follow him —
literally, to “walk after” him.
He invited them to trek the byways at his side,
living life beside him to learn from him as they journeyed.
His disciples would engage in life’s activities along with him, observing his responses and
imitating how he lived by God’s Word.

Out of this unusual teaching method
arose a well-known saying:
you should learn from a rabbi by
“covering yourself in his dust.”
You should follow so closely behind him as he traveled
from town to town teaching that billows of sandy granules
would cling to your clothes.
As you walked after your rabbi, your heart would change.
This will be our task in this book,
to stroll through Jesus’ ancient world at his side,
listening to his words with the ears of a disciple.
(Walking in the Dust of the Rabbi Jesus, Zondervan, p. 28)

There must have been a buzz of excitement when Jesus and His disciples walked
the dusty paths of Nazareth, and indeed, of all Galilee.

When Jesus came to Nazareth He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day
and participated in the study.

Lee Levine of Hebrew University summarizes the archaeological evidence for known
first century synagogues.

Solid archaeological evidence for the first-century synagogue
is attested at eight sites in Judea:
Masada, Herodium, Jerusalem (the Theodotos inscription from the City of David),
Qiryat Sefer, and Modi’in (both in western Judea),
with a possible additional site at Horvat ‘Etri, south of Bet Shemesh.
In the Galilee, it is found at Gamla, Migdal,
and quite probably Khirbet Qana,
with considerably less certain remains from
Capernaum, Chorazin, and at a second site in Migdal.
(Lee I. Levine, “The Synagogues of Galilee” in Fiensy and Strange, Galilee in the late second temple and mishnaic periods,
Vol. I. Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 2014. 129-150.)

The New Testament writers mention other synagogues such as the one at Nazareth.

It is unfortunate that the residents of Nazareth did not want to get dusty.
Are you dusty from following Jesus?
